Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition – DCDeadline:  October 31, 11. The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery seeks entries for the next “Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition.” The juried exhibition is open to artists over the age of 18 who may submit portraits in any visual-art medium, including painting, drawing, sculpture, prints, photography, electronic and digital media. Works must have been created after January 1, 2010. Submissions may be submitted online at portraitcompetition.si.edu between September 1 to October 31. The work of finalists will be shown in a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, March 22, 2013–January 4, 2014. The grand-prize winner will receive a $25,000 cash award and have the opportunity for a separate commission to portray a remarkable living American for the gallery’s collection. In addition, entrants may be featured on face2face.si.edu, the gallery’s blog, as the competition unfolds. Please visit portraitcompetition.si.edu for more information about the submission process.
 
“Hope” – The First in a Three Part Photo Exhibition – MDDeadline: October 13, 2011. Howard Avenue Arts Incubator in Kensington, MD announces a call to photographers for an international juried photography exhibition, December 3, 2011 – January 3, 2012. Best in Show – $500, Second place- $250, Third Place – $100 and Ten Honorable Mentions. Juror: Catriona Fraser. Hope is the first in a three part photo series focusing on the positive aspects of life. Hope can be poignant as well as fanciful or even humorous. Hope is one of most powerful emotions, sustaining the impossible and giving life to the unlikely. We want to see the hope you see through your lens. The three competitions offer photographers multiple opportunities to exhibit their work in an art-supporting Washington DC area gallery, be listed in the Washington Post, be included in a book publication and more. $35 for the first three (four until Aug 31) images, $10 per additional image. Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) Call for Exhibition Proposals, 2013 Season – VADeadline: October 16, 2011. GRACE (Greater Reston Arts Center) is a non-profit arts center in Northern Virginia dedicated to presenting visual art that illuminates new ideas and promotes dialogue between artists and audience. The exhibition program offers artists from the mid-Atlantic region opportunities to experiment and expand their work in an open, contemporary space. Artists living or working in Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia are invited to submit proposals. The arts center is now accepting proposals for periods of approximately 4 – 6 weeks from November 2012 through September of 2013. Six solo artists will be grouped into two Focus Exhibitions, each featuring three artists in separate areas of the gallery. Group exhibition proposals are also welcomed. The Washington School of Photography: Vision (Md) – MD Deadline: October 1, 11. The Washington School of Photography has a unique opportunity for Mid- Atlantic camera club members to be part of FotoWeekDC and the Bethesda Art Walk, exhibiting your images to the hundreds of visitors and workshop patrons who visit WSP for the opening and every week.   On Friday, November 11, 2011, WSP will open “Vision”, a mid-Atlantic Area Camera Club show, in the main section of its first floor gallery. Richmond Art Gallery International Mail Art Exhibition and Swap – VADeadline: October 1, 11. We invite artists from all over the world to contribute their work for the Richmond Art Gallery’s Mail Art Exhibition from November 17, 2011 – January 8, 2012. Theme: Economy. Technique: OPEN. Size: 5” x 5” (120 mm x 120 mm) – only works of this size will be accepted. Include: Full name, Address, Country, Title of work, Medium, Year, E-mail address. Cornucopia: Food for Thought from Female Artists – MDCapitol Arts Network is accepting entries through September 9 for this all-media show opening October 14th.  Ladies, take off your aprons and join us in front of the sketchpad, canvas, or behind the lens! Cornucopia will present female artists’ renderings of food, in celebration of October marking national apple, popcorn, caramel, pineapple, and vegetarian month, among others. Show us your best 2-d works of art for a show that will also benefit the The Manna Food Bank, serving Montgomery County, MD.   Jurors Catriona Fraser, Judith HeartSong, and Missy Loewe are CAN board members. Catriona Fraser is the owner and Director of the Fraser Gallery, an independent fine art gallery established in 1996, specializing in contemporary fine art and photography. Judith HeartSong works as an artist, muralist, and arts educator in  Metropolitan Washington, DC with work in numerous public and private collections.
