Juror's Statement:

with Erica Fortwengler

Juror Cynthia Connolly was looking for an interesting interpretation of light, or lack of light, as she combed through the submissions to the January "Let There be Light" show at The Art League Gallery.

Connolly had three pieces from the very beginning that she continually referenced. She felt that these pieces embodied the meaning of light. Using these artworks as her guide, she revisited them throughout the day to remind her as to what the quality of light meant to her.

She found the oils and watercolors particularly strong. Connolly was pleased to see some really excellent photography. "I would have liked to see even more photography. Photographers need to pay special attention to the execution of their print. There were a number of pixilation and output issues. Before looking at the image, I looked at the execution of the final product."

"I was happy to see so many landscapes depicting moments of light that are difficult to capture. Like the moment when the sky turns pink during a sunset – I think it is very difficult to capture and translate this moment the way we see it, and a lot of artists whose work I saw today successfully rendered this moment."

"A strong, interesting composition is very important. I want to see expression of line, and a feeling of freshness and spontaneity." Finding a combination of quality, interesting subject matter, skill, and clean presentation was key. Connolly emphasized the importance of framing and presentation. A number of pieces were eliminated for poor framing, i.e., dirty mats or glass.

Connolly awarded "My Onions" by Christine Lashley, the Ruth Greges Award. This was one of the three pieces she had selected from the beginning as her reference. "I gravitated toward this piece all day. This piece really exemplifies light."

Connolly is Director and Curator at Arlington County Ellipse Art Center where she has curated many exhibits, along with several throughout the Washington DC area. Connelly’s photography has been exhibited all over the world and has been printed in numerous magazines and books. She has conducted workshops at the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt in New York and at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, a letterpress workshop at the Andy Warhol Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and a workshop in Madrid Spain on "How to Take Beautiful Pictures of Nothing." Her most recent subjects are people, places and things in the process of change, which she hopes to capture before they transform completely. Her work can be viewed at
