Pamela H. Viola - Dec 2009

December Solo Artist Show
"The One Less Traveled”

Pamela H. Viola’s Solo Exhibit at The Art League Gallery
December 10, 2009 – January 4, 2010

Photographer Pamela Viola’s solo artist exhibit at The Art League Gallery, “The One Less Traveled,” features dreamlike, mysterious landscapes that challenge the viewer to see the world in a new and different way.

The image capture is just the starting point, a blueprint for the finished piece. “I’m not interested in perfection or capturing things just as they are.  I want to portray my surroundings as I interpret them, the way I want to present them.”  Most photographs are composed of multiple images as well as textures and pictorial elements blended together to build Viola’s final vision. “I select the palette and push the color to create the mood I want. I want the viewer to wonder, did that really exist? I want them to be intrigued, to really look and study the piece, creating their own narrative and wanderings, surrounding themselves both visually and tactilely with the image.”

“What I choose to photograph is intuitive and instinctual.  My goal is to encourage people to SEE – to really look at the wonders around them, above, below and behind them.”

Viola’s photographs are captured digitally and printed on archival papers with archival pigment inks. While current technology plays an enormous role in her work, Viola’s goal is to create prints with a distinctly handmade quality despite the use of technology.

Inspired by the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, Pamela Viola realizes that her path has taken her back to what she’s always wanted to do. The images in the exhibit “The One Less Traveled” all contain wandering roads and spaces, which symbolize her own journey.   While Viola’s love and aptitude with photography began as a child, it was not until after 15-years in the film industry production managing movies such as Black Hawk Down that she returned to still photography in 2001. Pamela Viola is now finally pursuing the career she always dreamed of.
