Marisa White - Birth of the Search

Birth of the Search by Marisa White, winner of the 60th Anniversary Award for Best in Show

Juror’s Dialogue with Erica Fortwengler

First time Art League juror Marta Staudinger selected a colorful and energetic exhibit to close out The Art League’s 60th Anniversary year. Of the 505 works submitted, Staudinger settled on 98 pieces for the December 2014 All-Media Exhibit.

The works Staudinger selected are a true reflection of her own aesthetic and stylistic preferences.  She cited emotion as the number one factor in her decision making – if she didn’t feel something while looking at a piece, it was a no. Staudinger is most often drawn to color, contemporary works, collages, and works that encompass the female figure. She didn’t have difficulty finding such within the submissions this month.

Staudinger noted that she came across a lot similar scenes – specifically, many landscapes with the same point of view and color palette. “Precision of color and movement could have taken these pieces to the next level.”

The 60th Anniversary Award for Best in show was awarded to “Birth of the Search” by Marisa White. “This piece was so different compared to everything else I saw, so it really jumped out as being unique. It was the first “yes” of the day!”

Staudinger presented the Carolyn Zakaski Watercolor Award to Gwen Bragg’s “October Dogwood.” “This artist has captured a particular moment in time – the leaves are dying but the berries look lush. I also really like how focus is completely on the subject in the foreground and the background is blurred out.”

The Bertha G. Harrison Memorial Award for Figurative Sculpture was presented to Marsha Brown for “Golden Stretch.” “I love sculptures of the female figure and I was immediately drawn to this piece. “It reminded me of my best friend and her sculptural work.”

Marta Staudinger (Washington DC, 1987) received her BA from George Mason University in Art History and her MA in New Media Curatorship from the Escola Superior de Disseny (ESDi) and the Universidad Ramón Llull in Barcelona, by means of an academic scholarship. She has previously worked on archival and curatorial projects at the National Bargello Museum, Medici Chapels and Casa Martelli in Florence, Italy, and has collaborated with the project "Arts combinatòries" at the Antoni Tàpies Foundation in Barcelona, Spain. Marta is an independent curator, photographer, artist, and art critic in Washington DC.

  • Carolyn Zakaski Watercolor Award ($200): Created in 2010 by Carolyn’s family, friends and colleagues to honor the memory of their friend Carolyn Zakaski. Carolyn was a watercolor artist who studied for many years with Gwen Bragg at The Art League. This award memorializes her deep commitment to fine arts and to The Art League.
  • Bertha G. Harrison Award ($125): This award was established by Gwen Harrison Lockhart, active Art League member and former President of The Art League Board of Directors, and recipient of the 2006 Alex Arts Award, presented by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts. The Alex Arts Award recognizes an Alexandria citizen that has made extraordinary contributions to Alexandria’s vibrant arts community and cultural life. Gwen established the Bertha G. Harrison Award in memory of her mother. The award recognizes her mother as an example of every parent who has supported their child’s artistic interests and encouraged them to develop those artistic interests. This award will be given annually for the Best in Show Figurative Sculpture.
