Claudia Cappelle - March 2015

Claudia Cappelle

"Reconstructing the Landscape"

Exhibit dates: March 5 – April 6, 2015

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 12, 6:30-8:00 pm

Claudia Cappelle’s “Reconstructing the Landscape” presents large-scale abstract paintings in acrylic and water-soluble crayons. The strong yet ethereal compositions of color, form and line, which evoke natural settings, will be on display in Cappelle’s first solo show at The Art League, on display from March 5–April 6, 2015.

A pivotal change in Cappelle’s work occurred when the exploration of seeing inward led her away from representational work, and she began expressing nature in an abstract form. The evolution included changes in media; most recently the addition of water-soluble crayons, used to create delicate lines that lead the eye across the work energetically as they dance through the heavier acrylic shapes. Cappelle notes that this particular series unfolded after reading “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek,” author Annie Dillard’s personal narrative of a year spent exploring Virginia’s Blue Ridge. “Reconstructing the Landscape” depicts few elements of traditional landscapes: Cappelle says she “seeks to convey the essence of nature without recreating it.”

For Cappelle, “painting is an expression that involves taking risks while inviting openness for finding better solutions. It involves trust, letting go, giving up control and preconceptions; thereby creating something greater and less contrived, often more powerful that [she] had originally conceived.”

Virginia-based artist Claudia Cappelle was born in Chicago, IL, where she attended the American Academy of Art and received her BS in Medical Illustration from the University of Illinois. After moving to DC, she continued her studies at the Corcoran School of Art and The Art League, and has exhibited in many local venues, including The Art League Gallery, Studio Gallery, and the Workhouse Arts Center.
