Somewhere In The Orient II
April 5 – 30, 2012

Elegant sculptural forms and garments, inspired by the Far East, are the subject of “Somewhere In The Orient II,” a solo exhibit of raku ceramic work by Marcia Jestaedt. More of an environment than an exhibit, this collection of work will be featured in The Art League Gallery, April 5 – 30, 2012.

Jestaedt’s large-scale interpretations of oriental robes, created from multiple raku tiles, are the focal point of the exhibit. Her hand-formed tiles are etched and imprinted with floral and geometric images, then richly glazed to achieve a three-dimensional quality. Her imagery is inspired by years of studying Asian culture and customs.

The raku firing process is what gives Jestaedt’s work its luminosity. Glazed tiles are placed in the kiln and the temperature is quickly brought up to 1750 degrees. Pieces are removed from the red hot kiln and placed in a metal container with dry leaves – these leaves ignite immediately, creating an atmosphere in the closed container that changes the silver nitrate in the glaze from an oxide to a metal. The unglazed portions absorb carbon and turn black. Although the raku process is highly unstable, Jestaedt’s thirty years of experience results in a high success rate.

Jestaedt has been working with clay for over thirty years. Her work has appeared in several notable publications focusing on hand building and raku firing. She has received grants and awards for her work from various arts organizations, including the Price George’s Arts Council, the Maryland State Arts Council, and the Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Jestaedt’s work has been exhibited and is in collections throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, and Asia. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland. Jestaedt is a resident artist at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, and this is her second solo exhibit at The Art League.
