Cindi Lewis, Blues, oil on panel.
Composed of musicians, instruments, and attentive audiences, Cindi Lewis’ paintings prompt viewers to enjoy musical performances from a purely visual perspective. Lewis strives to capture the atmosphere of live performances in “Onstage” at The Art League Gallery, October 10 – November 4, 2013.
As an artist with musicians in her circle of family and friends, Lewis became intrigued by the experience of seeing live music – the effects of the stage lights, the shapes and patterns created by the equipment, the motion and energy of the performers, and the interaction of the musicians with each other, their instruments, and the audience. Lewis seeks to capture and highlight the elements of live music that make it a different experience from listening to a recording. The works range in size from 9 x 12” to 18 x 24”, and offer dynamic compositions echoing the musical rhythm of the depicted performances.
As an experienced painter in both oils and watercolor, Lewis has always been drawn to the complex relationships between light and color. She finds herself attracted to challenging compositions, deftly handling the dark shadows and energetic forms found within the works in this exhibit.
Cindi Lewis has studied with instructors at The Art League School for over twenty years. She has exhibited within group shows at The Art League Gallery, Gallery West, and with the Potomac Valley Watercolorists. Her work is included in private collections in the United States and abroad.
