Jon Meadows - Soldier with Rifle

JON MEADOWS

A SOLDIER’S VOICE

September 10–November 12, 2015
POP UP Space: 104 S Union St, Alexandria, VA

Veteran Army Staff Sgt. Jon Meadows tells his story—the narrative of his war experience—through visual art. Visual art has made a connection for him. That connection gives his voice to us.

"A Soldier's Voice," an exhibition of Jon's artwork, will be featured in The Art League's new POP UP Space at 104 South Union Street in Alexandria.

Jon suffered a frontal-lobe traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan in January 2013, which affected his vision, cognition, and fine motor skills. Shortly after returning home in 2013, Jon began his journey in art through The Art League’s
IMPart program, with no prior art experience. IMPart (injured military personnel + art) offers a creative outlet for Injured Military Personnel & their caregivers to experience the transformative nature of the visual arts while aiding their transition to health & healing.

Jon's doctors, fellow veterans, and his artist instructors were immediately amazed by his masterful and emotive sculptures. A natural artist, Jon's work has since expanded to include paintings, drawings, and spoken word pieces.

“It’s helpful with my eyesight, it’s helpful with my fine motor skills, it helped me to think more and just to do so much with cognition and things like that. So many different skills that are involved in art that a lot of people don’t know they’re using, but you’re using it. And it’s actually helping through a therapeutic way and it’s enjoyable. So, it’s a totally different way of helping someone. When I express myself like this, it gives me a sense of relief, release, it just calms you down. You just go to another place and it takes away every other problem that you have, and you just feel good. And, then you’re just lost in the moment of making something. After you’re done with it and you make it and you see other people they like it. Especially, when you see somebody look at your work and then it means something to them. That means a lot. It really touches you. I get so much out of it.” –Jon Meadows
