Join internationally known instructor Susan Abbott for two weeks of plein-air painting in the heart of beautiful southern France. This countryside’s fabled fields of lavender, scarlet poppies, sunflowers, beautiful orchards and vineyards, dramatic hill towns, and magical light captivated Cezanne, Van Gogh, and generations of artists and writers. The last two weeks of June have been specifically selected by Susan for this workshop, as the lavender fields come into full bloom at this time, and are absolutely breathtaking. This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to paint in this unique and beautiful place.

The workshop will be based in the tiny hamlet of Les Bassacs, nestled in a valley in the Luberon Mountains, in the heart of Provence. The group will stay in a charming 13th century rural townhouse that is the home of
Arts in Provence, a painting program administered by English artists and hosts Liz and David Atkinson. Students share delicious gourmet meals, a painting studio with a panoramic view, and the house’s facilities, including a pool, patio, and library.

The emphasis of the workshop is on painting, and all painting locations are within a half hour of Les Bassacs (including the famous hill towns of Gordes, Roussillon, and Menerbes). Students will paint a variety of motifs, including charming villages, panoramic landscapes, and colorful markets. Susan Abbott, who has been taking groups to Les Bassacs for the last 13 years, will offer classes both outdoors and in the studio. All mediums and levels of experience are welcome.

Susan has worked as a professional artist for many years, exhibiting in galleries and museums around the country, and has painted commissions for numerous corporations and individuals, including Oprah Winfrey. Reviewers have praised Abbott's "virtuosity" and "dazzling skill in the unforgiving medium of watercolor" and have described her pieces as "fantastic studies of color and form and sublime everyday epics."  She has been an instructor at The Art League for over twenty years and is also a popular teacher of art workshops in Italy, Provence, Paris and other sites around the world. Her work has been featured on the cover of Watercolor Artist Magazine.

“There simply aren’t many watercolorists in America who can match [Abbott's] level of expertise. What makes her painting so interesting, however, is the peculiar tension between the dazzling display of skill and the underlying idea.” - The Washington Post

$3,150 per student, double occupancy. Limited single rooms are available for an additional charge of $200-350, dependent upon selection.
