Plein Air Painting in Southern Maryland
Solomons Island with Peter Ulrich
October 14–16, 2013

Calm Harbor — Peter Ulrich, watercolor

Join Peter Ulrich for a three-day, all-media painting excursion to Solomons Island in southern Calvert County, Maryland. Situated on a sliver of land where the mouth of the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay, this quaint waterfront village offers many opportunities for plein air painting. Gardens, cottages, fishing vessels, sail boats and motor boats, not to mention the famous Drum Point Lighthouse (1883) are all possibilities. (Drum Point is one of only three surviving screw-pile lighthouses from the original 45 that once stood sentinel on the Chesapeake.)

Mid-October typically offers a fine sunny interlude before the chill winds of autumn. The gardens will be filled with chrysanthemums, asters and the subtle warm palette of late summer foliage. Visits to the Calvert Marine Museum, the Annmarie Sculpture Garden, and Sotterley Plantation (1703) — prosperous in the age of tobacco, and now the only remaining Tidewater Plantation in Maryland open to the public — are all possible during your stay. Peter will demonstrate both his ink-and-watercolor sketchbook technique and his quick studies in watercolor and acrylic. Solomons is about 60 miles from Old Town Alexandria, approximately 90 minutes drive time. Accommodations have been reserved, including breakfast, for our group at the Back Creek Inn B&B.

Workshop fee: $195 tuition per person. Lodging and meals are not included, but are available at reasonable rates.
