Felting - Expanding the Possibilities

Students continue to explore the possibilities of 2-D and 3-D design in felt. A variety of techniques are addressed including inlay, mosaic style, cut outs, Mola style, transparency, pleating and resist dyeing.
Classes are held at the Springwater Studio of The Art League’s Madison Annex, 808 North Fairfax Street. The facility provides fully equipped, working studios for surface design, dyeing, spinning, weaving, batik, and other fiber techniques. Large work-spaces contain an assortment of floor looms, table looms, silk steamer, separate dyeing area, and spinning wheels.

Silver Jewelry the Easy Way-Wax Modeling

This fast and fun approach allows students to design jewelry with simple tools and inexpensive materials. Participants explore various wax working and model making methods used to create rings, earrings, pendants, or bracelets from start to finish. Completed models are sent out to be cast in metal. Finishing techniques are covered upon return of the cast work.

Abstract Art – New & Creative Aproaches
Delna Dastur
Students explore new, imaginative ways to create abstract art by using a wide array of materials such as charcoal, paste, ink and paint. Unusual ways to create texture, layers, and bold marks are taught along with the study of line, color and composition. A different contemporary artist is introduced in each class to inspire new approaches to abstraction. Critiques and demonstrations contribute to this intuitive process.

Gesture Drawing And Painting
Avis Fleming
This figure class will explore dynamic drawing techniques that combine continuous line, gesture, and contour line with the weight of value and color. Each session begins with exercises to improve observation and drawing skills. For longer poses, students look at how modern and old masters combine these elements to create expressive compositions with strong abstract content. All levels are welcome, but some drawing experience is helpful. Model fees are extra.

Exploring Surface Design
Julie Booth
This surface design class will focus on printing, painting and mark making techniques using pigment based fabric paint, paint sticks and other marking tools on a variety of fabrics. Students design and print texture, pattern and image blocks, as well as print with both natural and found objects. We will also cover working with color washes, resist techniques, monoprinting and screen printing. Participants are encouraged to explore their own personal visual vocabulary of mark making and symbolism. each student will work towards an individual project of their choice- an art cloth wall hanging, a quilt, cloth book or art garment- that incorporates the unique multi-layered fabrics created. A $20.00 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class. Supply list in The Art League Store.

Cartooning Camp
Is your child yearning for something new? Art camp provides a wonderful way of introducing children to several forms of visual art. In our basic art camp, each day brings a new project which may include drawing, painting, printmaking, or sculpture. In specialty camps, the focus is on immersing the children in one media. Camps come in w hole and half day sessions over a 3-5 day week. Tuition for all-day camps includes a supervised lunch hour. Create your own all-day session by combining a basic camp with a media specialty camp. When creating your own all-day session, there is an additional $35 per week charge for the supervised lunch hour. Campers in any all-day session should bring their own lunch for the midday break.
This camp explores the methods, techniques, and procedures which are used in the creation of comic strips and comic books. The focus is on t he basic principles of visual storytelling and drawing techniques that relate to the cartoon art form. All materials are provided.

Portrait Busts for Teens

Students create a 3-dimensional life size, self portrait bust in clay that is fired with an underglaze. Working from photos, drawings and the mirror, human head proportions and clay modeling are covered. A $20 materials fee is payable to the instructor.

Moving Towards Abstraction in Watercolor

This class explores both transparent and opaque pigments, pour color, stencil, collage, gesso and rice paper grounds, as well as other abstract approaches to painting. Each day introduces a design and color component to help focus the day's efforts and encourage students to break through some creative barriers. Students should have some painting experience. Acrylics are welcome.
