Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to become involved in the arts, and The Art League provides a fun, relaxing, and welcoming place to do so! Since The Art League’s inception, volunteering has been a mainstay of the organization, and we welcome you to browse the volunteer and internship opportunities below and join The Art League community.
Gallery hanging crew volunteers
All of The Art League’s artist members in the Gallery provide volunteer support, volunteering a total of almost 1,800 hours per year hanging shows, painting walls, hosting at receptions and events, computer work, calling members, gallery receiving, framing and matting, and even carpentry. The Art League volunteers make all the difference in the Gallery.
Volunteers in The Art League’s administrative offices assist with mailings, computer work, special projects, and more. Board service is another opportunity through which you can contribute significantly to The Art League’s success.
The Development Office seeks volunteers on a regular basis to assist with special events, mailings, outreach activities, and more. You can help The Art League's fundraising efforts by assisting at events, joining the Development Committee, or volunteering at one of our outreach activities. If you have experience or expertise in fundraising and development, we would love to have your help! See below for more about one of our outreach programs.
The 2012–13 SOHO class
Each summer, we recruit a team of adult, women volunteers to serve as mentors in the Space Of Her Own (SOHO) outreach program serving at-risk, low-income 5th-grade girls from Alexandria. Volunteer mentors are each paired with a participating girl, and together they meet weekly to participate in team building activities, learn life skills lessons, eat a healthy dinner, and participate in an art lesson taught by a professional Art League artist. At the end of the year, mentors renovate their girls’ bedrooms using the artworks created and giving each girl a “space of her own."
Volunteers must make a one-year commitment to attend SOHO sessions every Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Art League’s Duke Street Annex (1 Duke Street). Sessions run from late September through June. Across July and August, girls and mentors participate in community service activities on their own time.
SOHO is a joint program of The Art League and the Alexandria Court Service Unit. For more information on SOHO, click here.
Unpaid internships are available throughout the year for assisting in the gallery. A gallery internship provides great work experience where you not only gain direct experience working in the visual arts arena, but also learn about the business operations of the gallery. It can also fulfill collegiate intern requirements for both undergraduate and graduate programs.
Internships are also available in the School to help with Summer Art Camp. Each year, we look for creative high school and college students to help run the camp program and assist art teachers.
