The character archetypes of Hero and Villain have appeared in artwork through out history. Artists are encouraged to enter work that features their own interpretation of heroes, villains, or themes of good vs. evil, whether it be a classical reference or humorous understanding.

Meet the Juror

Caitlin Berry

Caitlin is a champion of creative culture. She has extensive expertise in Washington Color School, Mid-century African American, Post-War American, and Contemporary art. She is deeply connected to the Washington DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland art communities and currently lives in the Cherrydale neighborhood of Arlington, VA.

Prior to founding CBFA, Caitlin held positions at HEMPHILL Fine Arts, Washington DC, Eykyn Maclean, New York/London and Cristin Tierney Gallery, New York. She has lectured at Sotheby’s Institute of Art and often speaks to corporations about the art market, art in digital environments and art collecting. In 2019 & 2020, she curated “Art Night” with Hickok Cole Architects and Washington Project for the Arts. In 2019 she juried the Hill Center Galleries Regional Juried Exhibition. She was named one of DC Magazine’s Dynamic Women of 2020. Dedicated to serving her community, Caitlin is currently the Washington DC Chapter Co-Chair of ArtTable, the foremost national organization dedicated to advancing the leadership of women in the visual arts, and is a board member at Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art in Reston, VA. Caitlin also serves as the Interim Director of the Cody Gallery at Marymount University.

Caitlin holds a Post Baccalaureate in Gallery Management and a BA in Communication and Art History from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

For Artists

Guidelines

  • Artist must be a current exhibiting artist member of The Art League gallery.
  • All works must adhere to the Gallery hanging and framing requirements. For 2D artworks, no clip frames are permitted and hanging wire must be attached to the frame, not the backing. 2D artworks must have hanging wire. No saw tooth hangers permitted. Canvases may be gallery wrapped with no visible staples.
  • Artists may enter any current work made within 5 years, that features their own interpretation of heroes and villains.
  • Works are chosen by the selected juror’s curatorial vision and aesthetic.

We expect to notify artists of the results ten days after the deadline.
