There are many styles of abstract painting. The three basic schools, or styles, covered in this class are Figurative Abstraction, Non-Objective Abstraction, and Abstract Expressionism. Within these basic styles are many subcategories such as Automatism, Art Brut, Formalism, Minimalism, Lyrical Abstraction, Process Art and Color Field Painting. This class touches on some of these but the emphasis is on the basics. Techniques are introduced and shown in relation to a style. +The Essentials of Landscape Painting

Fall: This oil painting class covers the essentials of landscape painting on location from developing the composition and color scheme through preliminary studies to various underpainting techniques. The course will also explore the Dutch Masters through the Impressionists culminating in a private painting tour of the National Gallery of Art.

Winter: (Tools and Equipment for Painting On-site) This class is based on lectures and a series of hands-on lessons covering canvas preparation, varieties of grounds, plein air equipment, digital imaging, tips for quick set-up, and an important lesson on proper varnishing techniques.

Spring: As a follow up to the Fall session, this on-site oil painting class will cover new techniques and procedures to make location painting more productive. Demonstrations include using a preset palette, traveling light with watercolor, underpainting techniques, glazing and scumbles, and finishing paintings in the studio.
