This class is open to students who have taken the introductory course in Sumi-e. It is also open to students who are already reasonably comfortable painting the four nobles, have gotten basic instruction in brush and paint handling techniques and water control. The course is for those who are ready to take on more challenging subjects including animals, landscapes and seasonal plants and will be taught more advanced techniques for getting special effects. A heavy emphasis will be put on composition and use of positive and negative space and color and tone harmonies. The instructor will demonstrate one new technique or subject per class and the students will work on those subjects or subjects of their own and then submit them for comment.
