Introductory Shodo: East Asian Calligraphy For Sumi-e Painters (Online)

Instructor: Mark Malecki

“Shodo” is the ancient art of calligraphy for the writing of Chinese characters and the Japanese syllabary. These characters were invented in ancient China to represent ideas and soon became standardized in Korea and Japan as well. Japanese calligraphers changed the shape of some of these characters to make a syllable-based system called “hiragana.” Students in this course study one or both of these systems depending on their interests. The instructor demonstrates the writing of characters explaining the stroke order and meanings. This course is of particular interest to sumi-e practitioners who wish to know how to write these characters and add them to their paintings. The compositional effects of adding writing to sumi-e paintings is covered. This course is also suited for non-painters and beginners wishing to study this engrossing art form. Knowledge of Chinese or Japanese language is not required.
