Metal Sculpture

Instructor: Brian Kirk
Brian Kirk "Votive Hand" Metal Sculpture
Votive Hand by Brian Kirk

Students are introduced to metallurgy and learn how to weld mild steel plate and rod with oxyacetylene welding equipment to create decorative sculpture and furniture. After practicing on available scrap metal, students design their own projects that range from table-top sculpture to decorative furniture like coffee and side tables. Blacksmithing techniques are demonstrated to fold, band and twist metal into new forms. Copper brazing and bronze brazing are demonstrated and incorporated into the welders’ tool kit to supplement their understanding of metalworking. Volumetric, kinetic, geometric and linear sculpture creation are demonstrated by the instructor.
