Oil and Cold Wax Painting

Oil and cold wax painting is a technique that encourages experimentation, exploration and a level of creativity. By blending cold wax with oil paint, as well as many other forms of pigment (powder, oil sticks, graphite to name just a few), the artist can build layers, excavate layers, and create texture. The interplay of colors in the many layers of the paintings creates luminosity and depth. The technique can be used for abstract art as well as more realistic art and portraiture. Rather than using brushes, most cold wax and oil is applied with a variety of including squeegees, brayers and palette knives (and the most flexible tool of all, fingers). A modest fee is paid to the instructor for shared consumables. Students must acquire supplies for this class. All levels are welcome. No prior painting experience is necessary, though helpful.

Supplies are required for this course. As a service to our students, most supply lists are kept on hand in the Art League Supply Store. The existence of this store gives students the opportunity to obtain supplies in advance and come to class prepared to work. The Art League Supply Store is in studio 217 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, just around the corner from the Art League School Registration Office.

They are open 7 days a week for your convenience. Due to our large enrollment, we are unable to mail, fax, or read supply lists over the phone. It is the responsibility of the student to acquire their own materials.

Hours: Sunday through Thursday from 11:00am to 5:00pm
Friday and Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm
