In this class, you are going to learn the basic concepts and techniques of portrait and figure painting in oil. We will cover areas such as values, colors, edges, transitions, likeness and composition. The instructor will give demos during class. We will be painting from live models as well as photos. You will learn how to take photographs for portrait painting, including elements such as lighting and angles. There will also be an introduction to narrative painting, where the subjects are not posed, but rather performing real-life activities like playing music in a jam, hiking on a mountain, or sitting in a subway car commuting to work.
This is a beginner to intermediate painting class. Some drawing or painting experience will be helpful, but not absolutely necessary. Model fees are extra. This class requires supplies. Most supplies and supply lists may be obtained at The Art League Store in the Torpedo Factory, room 217. The store hours are 11am – 5pm, 7 days a week. You can reach the store at: 703-548-8127.
