This class introduces students to the fundamentals of painting including the tools, materials and techniques painters rely on. The emphasis will be on painting from observation, ways of starting a painting, understanding how to develop a painting using value and shape contrasts, as well as exploring the physical working properties of paint. Students will begin with a limited palette of hues but expand their color choices in the later part of the class. Continuing students may explore an expanded palette from the start. Guidance on how to set up and light a work space and subject matter will be provided. Group discussions will be held to share work, exchange experiences and receive feedback from the instructor. Students will also receive individual feedback.
This class requires supplies. Most supplies and supply lists may be obtained at The Art League Store in the Torpedo Factory, room 217. The store hours are 11am – 5pm Sunday through Thursday and 10am – 5pm Friday and Saturday. The Art League Store’s phone number is 703-548-8127.
