In this class, students make their distant mountains stay distant, and their roads and streams appear flat on their painted ground. Students create depth even in large flat landscapes, like fields and lakes. This course covers object placement in the picture space, relative size, overlapping shapes (especially overlapping ellipses), and vanishing point opportunities, decreasing vertical size. It also covers the principles of atmospheric perspective, involving color, value, texture, and detail. Of course these elements are neither tricky nor secret, but are used to achieve the illusion of great depth on a flat surface. All instructor demonstrations are done in pastel, however students may use the media of their choice. The class meets on Zoom.
