Shodo: East Asian Calligraphy For Sumi-e Painters – Online

Instructor: Mark Malecki

No class on July 5 and July 12

“Shodo” is the ancient art of calligraphy for the writing of Chinese characters and the Japanese syllabary. First invented in ancient China, the characters, which represent ideas, became standardized and also were brought to Korea and Japan. Japanese calligraphers changed the shape of some of these characters to make a syllable-based system called “hiragana.” Students in this course will study one or both of these systems depending on their interests. The instructor will demonstrate the writing of characters explaining the stroke order and meanings. This course will be of particular interest to sumi-e practitioners who wish to know how to write these characters and add them to their paintings. The compositional effects of adding writing to sumi-e paintings will be covered. But this course is also suited for non-painters and beginners wishing to study this engrossing art form. Knowledge of Chinese or Japanese language is not required. This online class will meet on Zoom.

The classes are recorded so that students who are unable to attend the class or who wish to review the class demonstrations and lectures, may view the recorded lessons for some weeks afterward.
