Soft Pastel and Gouache Painting

Learn the fundamentals and application of painting in soft pastel and gouache. Discover essential techniques while practicing painting from life or from your photo references. Learn about different surfaces such as vellum, mylar, and toned papers, brands of soft pastel and gouache. Historical and contemporary painters who worked in soft pastel and gouache. Each week you will receive pre-recorded demos on how to apply soft pastel, gouache and at its different consistencies. You may alternate between each medium or choose to focus on one. We will have group critiques and I provide individual critiques through the duration of this class. At the end of our class you will receive a Padlet PDF featuring your work and your peer’s work. Comments on your work given by me and your peers who have voluntarily commented also.

Soft Pastel and Gouache Painting Supply Kit

This kit of supplies is available for purchase here, and can be shipped for a fee, or picked up from the school store. The kit includes the underlined items. Please indicate in the notes section of your order if you would like to schedule in store pick-up, or if you need your kit mailed to you. Learn about different surfaces such as vellum, mylar, panel, and toned papers, brands of soft pastel and gouache, and historical and contemporary painters who worked in soft pastel and gouache. Each week you will receive pre-recorded demos on how to apply soft pastel, and gouache at their different consistencies. You may alternate between each medium or choose to focus on one. Soft pastels by Sennelier, and Nu Pastel

Cream masking tape

Soft vine charcoal

Suggested papers: Ingres, Colourfix, and Mi-tientes.

Chamois

Tortillions

Hard pink or white eraser

Kneaded eraser

Your own reference photographs

For Gouache: 

Arches cold-pressed watercolor pad, or hot-pressed watercolor pad, or toned Hahnemuehle, Ingres paper and choose the color you would prefer to work on

Graphite pencil

Kneaded eraser

Winsor and Newton or Holbein Gouache colors:

Ivory Black

Alizarin Crimson

Ultramarine Blue

Yellow Ochre

Raw Sienna

Burnt Sienna

Burnt Umber

Raw Umber

Terra Verte

Round plastic palette for ink and a large rectangular palette for watercolor and gouache

 

Masking tape (Artist tape)

Two cups for water

Paper towel or Cloth

Watercolor Brushes: rounds, filberts, and flats in variety of sizes
