Tips, Tricks and Principles of Achieving Depth in Landscape

Instructor: Nancy Freeman

In two-dimensional artwork, all perception of 3D space and distance is an illusion from still-life to landscape. This course covers the tools we have to create this illusion. We start with the most important elements and finish with special situations. All instructor demonstrations are done in pastel for speed; however, students may use the media of their choice for critiques. For the class exercises, only sketch paper and pencil or charcoal are needed. The class meets on Zoom.

Materials:

Since pastel colors cannot be “mixed” to make colors in the same way that paints can, it is good to have a complete range of colors and values of pastel. A good place to start is the 96-color set of NuPastels. These have a good range and are versatile, although on the harder side. As for paper, you can’t go wrong with Canson Mi-tientes in Steel Gray, but any mid-value neutral color paper with good tooth is fine. Avoid light colored or white papers. Also bring a sketchbook or other inexpensive scrap paper. Bring any other pastels or pastel pencils you already have, and we will discuss materials more at the first class.

In addition, some artist’s tape or clips for securing the paper to the board, a stiff bristle brush or two, (I use old stiffened oil paint brushes), some snug disposable gloves, a charcoal pencil, and a ruler can be handy.
