In this online Zoom course, students learn to paint portraits of their family and friends in the expressive medium of watercolor. The class first focuses on drawing, then moves on to skin tones, hair, clothes, and background, then finally deals with facial expressions of the subject. After practicing full-on and three-quarter-view portraits together, the class works on self-portraits and double portraits on their own with the instructor’s guidance. Students work from photo references, either provided by the instructor or by themselves. All skill levels are welcome.
Class periods consist of long demos, during which student can either paint along or watch. They are lively with discussions regarding supplies, color mixing, and other issues and several critique sessions. Watercolor portrait painters and drawing manuals are also introduced for further inspiration. Before and after each class, the instructor will send the students emails with the links as well as the detailed explanations of the class content and supplies. The students are encouraged to practice at home and email the results for feedback.
