Sugar Poem

(Written by artist)

Do you remember the cereal
that scorched our mouths
with sugar and
dissolved in dunes
at the bowl’s bottom?

The one we ate while
stretching our sleep-shirts
into membranes over drafty knees?
When Mom was still within reach.

It was the cereal
that melted in wax opals
across groggy grins.
The one with marshmallows
we hunted.

Remember?
The one that
sank teeth into us?
Whose box promised us blessings
and called us
to the trough.

Breakfast as benediction,
turning milk into syrup.
We prayed with our
little drunk salty tongues.
