The relationship between a form (the “figure”) and its background is one of the most important and engaging concepts in painting. This intensive on-line workshop explores all aspects of the figure/ground relationship in practical ways that will improve your painting, no matter your medium, style or subject matter. We’ll use references with models, still life, and abstraction to explore a wide range of inspiring figure/ground exercises, including:
–How to use the figure/ground relationship to see more wholisticly and draw more accurately.
–How to use value and pattern to create a dynamic relationship between figure and ground.
–How to use color to explore space and flatness in the figure/ground relationship.
–Using negative/positive shapes as the foundation for strong composition.
Our workshop will have:
Zoom classes with slide lectures, critiques and demonstrations from 10:00am—12:00 pm on March 8th, March 10th, March 12th, and March 15th.
Daily Painting assignments March 8th—March 13th with figure, still life and abstractions as subject matter.

A virtual classroom private Facebook group for sharing our paintings, thoughts, instructional videos, and instructor’s critiques.
Students can consult with Susan by email or phone with any questions between Zoom meetings.
Mediums: oils, watercolor, gouache or acrylics. Levels: Intermediate to advanced.
