In this workshop, students have an opportunity to explore abstract expression using watercolor, Chinese ink and gauche on shikishi boards and rice paper. There will be demonstrations, individual instruction, as well as group discussions and critiques. The process is to wet the board, add layers of color; and then manipulate it by tipping the board to give direction, energy, motion and flow to the ink and watercolor. The technique allows for “controlled” spontaneity combining wet and dry, abstract and realistic, detail and minimal suggestion together. Po’mo presents an opportunity to blend traditional constructs with modern aesthetics, uniting west and east producing expressive landscapes and abstract paintings. (In other words, wet the board, put color down and let it rock and roll!! The possibilities are endless.)
This workshop is presented on the digital platform Zoom.
