Soft pastel is one of the most versatile painting mediums, offering many layering options, allowing artists to capture the spirit of a place through gesture, line and composition. Soft pastels are easy to pack up and go for plein air work from your backyard to overseas destinations. In this two-day introduction to landscape workshop, Bryan Jernigan instructs the students how to sort pastels by value for more expedient work, choose the right paper for the subject being communicated and instill the principles of composition, value and color for premiere pastel paintings. Jernigan helps participants tactfully interpret the subject matter from photos, distill a scene to the magic pieces necessary for the visual story and harness that pesky color wheel through demonstrations and exercises. With few practical but important supplies, students – from beginners through intermediate and beyond – will learn how to apply pastels, render a scene and mat and frame their work without a smudge in sight! A short list of supplies is required and students will render scenes from their own photo supply as well as photo references from the instructor.
