Traveling with your Sketchbook

Instructor: Susan Abbott

Zoom classes 11:00am—1:30pm ET, Saturday-Tuesday, March 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 2024

Home assignments each afternoon

This popular workshop teaches students to use drawing, watercolor, collage, and text to record their travel and at-home experiences. Participants learn to use their sketchbook as a personal journal and also make it a work of art! Students practice quick drawing with several fun exercises, “traveling” through their home and neighborhoods with focused assignments, and look through several artists’ sketchbook journals for inspiration and new ideas. Past students said, “This class changed my life!” because it taught them how to travel with more awareness and purpose. All levels of drawing experience are welcome, including beginners.

Student reviews are wonderful.

“Your class helped me get a sense of direction and purpose when traveling. Now that my trip is over, I can look back to places and drawing with fond memories. Thank you!”

“This class really helped me on my recent trip to the Greek islands. I went with a group of watercolorists and my journal was the envy of the group.”

Traveling With Your Sketchbook with Susan Abbott

Small ring bound sketchbook
, such as 6” x 6” or 7” x 10” Canson field sketchbook or Holbein multimedia drawing sketchbook—sized under 7” x 10”

2 or more permanent (waterproof) black felt tip markers

Sizes fine and/ or medium. Faber-Castell PITT brand if possible. Optional extra colors: red or sanguine

HB or B pencil

Glue stick and scissors

Paper towels

Watercolors

A small empty white plastic folding palette and the following pigments:

Permanent Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Pale or any primary yellow

Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna

Permanent Red or Cadmium Red or any “orangish” red

Alizarin Crimson or Thalo Red or any “purplish” red

Ultramarine Blue or any primary blue

Thalo Blue or Winsor Blue or Prussian Blue or any greenish dark blue

Burnt Umber

Fill the stall in your palette a few days ahead so that the paint dries before class.

Note: Watercolor supplies come in student or professional grades. Student grades (such as “Cotman”) are less expensive, but the color and handling are inferior to better quality paint. Buy professional brand paint, and if cost is a factor, buy just 3 primary colors (Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Thalo or Winsor Blue, and Permanent Yellow) in professional grade paint. If you already have a palette set up with watercolors, you can use that.

Round watercolor brush— small (not tiny).  A #6 Winsor & Newton round Sceptre series brush is a good choice (Don’t get a cheap brush like squirrel’s hair that will be too limp.)

OR colored pencils or water-soluble pencils if you want to use these instead of watercolor

The kit includes the underlined items.
Cost is $110.32 plus sales tax of $6.62 for a Total = $ 116.94
Please contact us at store@theartleague.org if you would like to purchase a selection of items different than the kit.
