Lou Stovall: The Museum Workshop

Lou Stovall, Untitled, 1972, Silkscreen print, 40 x 26 in., Courtesy of the artist

Lou Stovall: The Museum Workshop, at The Phillips Collection, reexamines the history and legacy of the Dupont Center, an artist’s museum founded in Washington, DC, in 1969. Under the visionary collaboration of curator Walter Hopps and artist Lou Stovall, the Dupont Center became DC’s meeting place for artists of different cultures and generations. This exhibition presents work produced by artists at the workshop and collected by Stovall between 1969 and 1973, as well as Stovall’s early community posters from 1967 and 1968, which document DC in a time of protest and upheaval. The presentation at The Phillips Collection brings together a variety of art from the workshop, including sculpture by Rockne Krebs and Leni Stern, photography by William Christenberry and John Gossage, and paintings by Sam Gilliam, Thomas Downing, and Paul Reed. It’s on view through October 9, 1600 21st Street, NW.

We Are Made of Stories: Self-taught Artists in the Robson Family Collection

Sister Gertrude Morgan, Fan, ca. 1970, paint and ink on card.

Artists without formal training, who learned from family, community, and personal journeys, have long been a presence in American art. But it was not until the 1980s, with the help of trailblazing advocates, that the collective force of their creative vision and presence irrevocably turned the tide in the mainstream art world. Through drawings, paintings, and sculptures that span the narrative to the abstract, the artworks in We Are Made of Stories: Self-Taught Artists in the Robson Family Collection convey the humanistic power of art and allow us to see the world through the lens of another. It is on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum through March 26, 2023; 8th and G Streets, NW.

Soar

Jennifer Brewer Stone, Blue Dragon Duo.

The Torpedo Factory Artists Association’s Van Landingham Gallery, located in 311, presents Soar, a membership show featuring artworks by Joyce Zipperer, Samantha Shelton, Guido Zanni, Tom Kelly, Eileen O’Brien, Jennifer Brewer Stone, and Rebecca McNeely.  Additionally the gallery is offering small gifts, art cards, block printed totes, and jewelry.
