August 2022 Open Exhibit

Hot Night Cool Jazz by Jeanne McIntyre; Watercolor

Diverse works in different mediums are the feature of Open Exhibits at The Art League. Ninety-eight artworks including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture, collage, glass, printmaking, and fiber art are in the August 2022 Open Exhibit. It was juried by Philadelphia-based glass artist Amber Cowan.

Wild Suburbia by Andrea Cybyk

Sultry by Andrea Cybyk; Acrylic on paper

Andrea Cybyk, our August solo artist, finds beauty in the scourge of gardeners everywhere: common weeds. Wild Suburbia celebrates these botanical outcasts—from the petite and humble to the huge and invasive—that thrive in sidewalk cracks, abandoned fields, gravelly roadsides, and other forgotten spaces. In Cybyk’s colorful artworks—a combination of painting and printmaking—these uninvited garden guests appear wondrous.

Portraits of Persistence by Rhonda J. Smith and I Shut My Eyes and See by Cathy Wilkin

Rhonda Smith, Louise V. Hicks on Bird Wallpaper

Two new exhibits just opened at TAG/The Artist Gallery in Frederick, Maryland. Portraits of Persistence, Rhonda J. Smith’s exhibit of 12 monotypes, portrays students from Storer College, a historically black college in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, that operated from 1867 to 1955. The linoleum-printed images offer individual likenesses of students while wallpaper and hand-cut backgrounds add additional texture and color.

Opus 1 by Cathy Wilkin

Cathy Wilkin’s intricate collages are the focus of I Shut My Eyes and See. Her work combines collage and painting to reflect a life directed and centered around her art. “These six pieces were executed this past year,” Wilkin says. “I felt like there had been a tear in the universe and navigating this world had never been more challenging.”

Cathy Wilkin will be in conversation about her exhibit on Sunday, September 4, from noon to 1 p.m. Rhonda Smith will demonstrate her printing process on the same day from 1 to 3 p.m.. Dawne Raines Burke, PhD will give a lecture on the history of Storer College on September 18 at 4 p.m. Portraits of Persistence and I Shut My Eyes and See will be on view through September 25; 501 Market Street, Frederick, MD.

Enjoy the long weekend!
