What are Donor-Advised Funds (DAF)?

A simple, flexible, and tax-advantageous way to give.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a charitable investment account designed for supporting the charitable causes you care about. You can usually get an immediate tax deduction when you contribute money, stocks, or other assets to a DAF with a public charity (e.g., Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, National Philanthropic Trust, or Schwab Charitable Fund, etc.). The contributed funds can then be invested to grow tax-free, and you have the flexibility to recommend grants to an eligible charitable organization, such as The Art League.

In essence, DAFs make charitable giving efficient and tax-friendly. They are increasingly popular in the United States due to their simplicity and tax advantages. DAFs now take in approximately 22% of all U.S. individual charitable giving. Because taxpayers subsidize DAF contributions through charitable tax deductions, we all have a vested interest in ensuring that the money stored in DAFs is actively deployed for the greater good.

How a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) Works:

  • GIVE:  Make a tax-deductible donation by setting up a Giving Account and contributing cash, stocks, or other assets. This step ensures an immediate tax deduction, and the donated funds are committed to charity.
  • GROW:  Your donation can grow tax-free while you decide which charities to support. Various investment options are available.
  • GRANT:  Recommend grants to support your chosen charities. The DAF allows you to donate to any IRS-qualified public charity and the sponsoring organization ensures the funds are used for charitable purposes. The Giving Account provides a flexible way to support charities at your preferred pace.
