What is a donor-advised fund (DAF)?

DAFs are a simple, flexible, and tax-advantageous way to give to The Art League!

In summary, DAFs are a financial vehicle that provides donors with a flexible way to give to causes they care about and a tax-savvy method for setting aside money specifically for that purpose. It is a private fund administered by a third-party “sponsoring organization” and created for the purpose of managing charitable donations on behalf of an organization, a family, or an individual. (See examples of Sponsoring Organizations below)

Donors can contribute cash and a wide range of non-cash assets—including stocks, shares of mutual funds, publicly traded securities, private assets, and crypto—and then recommend that the fund’s money be used to make grants to charities of their choice.

How do DAFs work?

Guidelines vary by sponsoring organization, but there is often no minimum donation required to start your DAF. You receive an immediate tax deduction upon contributing to the fund. The DAF’s sponsoring organization then actively manages and invests the funds, providing tax-free growth.

When you’re ready to make a donation from your DAF, simply recommend The Art League to your sponsoring organization, and the grant will be disbursed. In general, there are no limits to the number or size of contributions and grants you can make, and you have the option to set up recurring grants, as well. Recurring grants help The Art League best plan for the future. However, some sponsoring organizations, such as Fidelity or Schwab, will require you to make a minimum gift of $50.

Want to set up a new DAF to support The Art League?

  1. To establish a DAF, reach out to a sponsoring organization to confirm it is a good fit for your overall financial and charitable planning.
  2. If it is a good fit, you – or a financial advisor, working on your behalf – will work with the sponsoring organization to name your DAF, identify a Primary Advisor and set the investment allocation preference for the assets. All other information can be updated at any time upon opening the DAF account.
  3. The final stage of the set-up process is officially contributing to the DAF. Usually, this includes completing an agreement form with the sponsoring organization and transferring the assets. Some, but not all, sponsoring organizations may require an initial contribution minimum. Once your DAF is established, you can then recommend a grant be made to The Art League from your new fund!
We’re honored you have chosen to support The Art League through your DAF!

Please note that your name will NOT be attributed to the gift; it will arrive labeled as an anonymous grant from the sponsoring organization. If you do not wish to remain anonymous, please let us know when you make the DAF donation so we can adequately thank you and celebrate your generosity!
