July 2024 Open Exhibit

Experience the authentic creativity of member artists through Open Exhibits at The Art League. This collection—92 artworks in all— boasts a vibrant mix of painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media. The July 2024 Open Exhibit, meticulously curated by respected artist and William & Mary professor, Elizabeth Mead, is a testament to the passion and talent within our artistic community.

 

 

Vanishing by Holly Cole

Veterans: Rhinos by Holly Cole; Fiber sculpture

Holly Cole’s enchanting exhibit, Vanishing, is a heartfelt tribute to the disappearing species on our planet. Drawing inspiration from the resilience of endangered animals, she creates breathtaking sculptures and quilts using surplus military fabric and sheers. Through her art, Holly warmly highlights the pressing issues of fast-vanishing habitats, trophy hunting, and shifting climates, inviting us all to take a closer look at the world we share with these magnificent creatures.

A Sip of Alexandria Special Exhibit

Celebrate Alexandria’s 275th anniversary at A Sip of Alexandria, our special exhibit brought to you in partnership with Port City Brewing Company. To honor Alexandria’s rich history, this presentation showcases the city’s unique allure through nearly 20 art pieces, all available for purchase. Set amidst the cozy ambiance of Port City Brewing Company’s Lighthouse Lounge, these artworks deftly encapsulate the timeless charm of the historic city. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and history of Alexandria, with the exhibit open until August 1 at Port City Brewing Company, 3950 Wheeler Ave, Alexandria, Virginia.

 

 

Earth Awakened by Camille Kouyoumdjian

Don’t miss Earth Awakened, a solo exhibition by Art League member Camille Kouyoumdjian, at Glen Echo Park’s Stone Tower Gallery. The paintings in this collection pay homage to the beauty of our planet while raising awareness about its fragile state. Using layered surfaces to depict intricate ecosystems and diverse landscapes, Kouyoumdjian aims to capture the delicate balance of human reliance on our environment. Viewers are invited to explore the depths of their own connection to nature and hopefully leave with a renewed sense of reverence for the natural world. Earth Awakened is on view through July 28; 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, Maryland.

 

 

Destinos: Prints and Zines from Mexico

Destinos, at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, offers a glimpse into the contemporary printmaking scene in Mexico, showcasing prints and zines created and distributed by Mexican studios and shops. Through a selected group of risograph prints and screenprints, the featured artists, with their distinctive styles and techniques, utilize a dynamic mix of printmaking methods to delve into themes of personal and national identity, social justice, and pop culture. The prints not only reflect Mexico’s complex history, but also spark conversations about its ever-evolving social landscape. Destinos is on view through August 18; 4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville, Maryland.

 

 

My Folks and Flowers by Matthew Maybin

Local Fort Washington, Maryland, artist Matthew Maybin brings to Harmony Hall a cohesive, colorful body of work that is a celebration of diversity, vibrancy, and flows with the timeless beauty of nature. The artist uses the techniques of digital mixed media art like digital painting and drawing in his exhibition My Folks and Flowers. Within Maybin’s work is a community depicted that thrives in its own unique story. Viewers are encouraged to connect with the artist’s subjects and their symbolic flower(s) for internal reflection. The end result is a delight of bright color schemes and intricate details that create a rich visual tapestry of joy. My Folks and Flowers is on view through August 17; 10701 Livingston Road, Fort Washington, Maryland.
