Abstract Painting (Oil or Acrylic)

Instructor: Bryan Jernigan

This class develops students’ painting skills through the self-expression of color and form. Students use processes that rely on the formal principles of composition, value and color and they learn how to take risks that produce paintings that are unique to them. Students begin by creating an inspiration board that includes classic and contemporary abstract paintings, a color palette specific to each student and then each student synthesizes the elements from each painting – color, line work, texture, etc. – that they want to have show up in their own works. Along with Jernigan, students work through a process of play, contemplation and resolution to create one large painting and then a series of three smaller pieces to see what it’s like to paint on a large scale and to develop a body of work that holds together as a cohesive collection. For novice and experienced painters, students discover the different levels of abstract – from semi-abstract to non-representational. Students respond to color and emotion and document it in class. Students need to acquire supplies for this class. A list of recommended supplies must be picked up from the School Store located in room 217 of the Torpedo Factory.
