Contre-jour (French for ”against daylight”) produces backlighting of the subject. Backlighting usually hides details, causes a stronger contrast between light and dark, creates silhouettes and emphasizes lines and shapes. Thesun, or other light source, is seen as either a bright spot or as a strongglare behind the subject. Often the subject exhibits “rim lighting” which creates a bright, light outline of the subject. This workshop will explore all of these aspects of this important opportunity for creating dramatic paintings.
