Welcome to Artful Weekend
-our listing of area art exhibits and events-
This weekend: March 2024 Open Exhibit and Lines in Color by Alyse Radenovic at the League; The Fabulous Staigers at Nepenthe Gallery; Vantage Points: Women Artists and the Landscape at Willow Street Gallery; and Living Colors at Pazo Fine Art.
March 2024 Open Exhibit
Diverse artworks by member artists are the feature of Open Exhibits at The Art League. This month, 99 artworks—painting, drawing, photography, fiber art, ceramics, and mixed media—are on view. The March Open Exhibit was juried by artist Juliette Colas, and is on view through April 7.
Lines in Color by Alyse Radenovic
March solo artist Alyse Radenovic employs multifold vertical lines in an array of colors for the 11 works featured in her solo exhibit Lines in Color. Each painting is an elaborate yet streamlined nexus of consonant and dissonant color combinations, creating harmonious statements from the interconnection of disparate hues. Each composition is a rich and unified tapestry, at once dynamic and serene. Lines of Color is on view through April 7.
The Fabulous Staigers
Art League member Marsha Staiger isn’t the only artist in her family—her daughters are, too. Marsha and her New York based eldest daughter Melissa Staiger join forces for The Fabulous Staigers, a duo exhibition at Nepenthe Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia. It is on view through from March 23; 7918 Fort Hunt Road.
Vantage Points: Women Artists and the Landscape
Vantage Points: Women Artists and the Landscape, at Willow Street Gallery, brings together DC-based artists Mei Mei Chang, Martha Crawley, Chris Luckman, Nancy Randa, Katharine Shuman, and Katie Jett Walls, all of whom are current and past members of the artist collective at DC Arts Studios. Each of these women approach their creative expressions of the natural world differently, but each is fully in command of her perspective, centered not as a subject but as creator within the natural world. In addition to the artworks on display, these artists are opening up their process to gallery visitors with installations of reference material and inspiration behind the landscape pieces you on view. Join Willow Street Gallery for an opening reception Friday, March 15, from 6-8 p.m.; artists’ talk Friday, March 22 from 6-8 p.m.; and the closing reception and poetry reading: Friday, April 5 from 6-8 p.m. Vantage Points is on view through April 5; 6925 Willow Street NW, Washington, D.C.
Living Colors
Pazo Fine Art presents Living Colors, a unique exhibition highlighting paintings by Josef Albers, Thomas Downing, Matthew Feyld, Dorothy Fratt, David Headley, Helene Herzbrun, Howard Mehring, Terry Parmelee, Kimber Smith, and Vivian Springford. Living Colors delves into the transformative period of 20th century abstractionists whose artistic dialogue underscored an important shift, among pioneers of the avant-garde, into the Color Field movement; often of the variety Clement Greenberg described as “Post Painterly Abstraction.” It is on view through May 18; 4228 Howard Avenue, Kensington, Maryland.
Enjoy the weekend!
