March 2024 Open Exhibit
Diverse artworks by member artists are the feature of Open Exhibits at The Art League. This month, 99 artworks—painting, drawing, photography, fiber art, ceramics, and mixed media—are on view. The March Open Exhibit was juried by artist Juliette Colas, and is on view through April 7.
Lines in Color by Alyse Radenovic
March solo artist Alyse Radenovic employs multifold vertical lines in an array of colors for the 11 works featured in her solo exhibit Lines in Color. Each painting is an elaborate yet streamlined nexus of consonant and dissonant color combinations, creating harmonious statements from the interconnection of disparate hues. Each composition is a rich and unified tapestry, at once dynamic and serene. Lines of Color is on view through April 7.
Sydney Vernon
Since 2018, DMV native Sydney Vernon has been superimposing and altering personal family photographs with both real and imagined histories from Black American culture to explore the Black femme experience. New and recent works in her eponymous exhibition, at Phillips@THEARC, combine elements of painting, drawing, collage, and printmaking invites viewers into Vernon’s world. Her depictions of intimate interior scenes and familiar spaces complement the paintings by Pierre Bonnard on view at The Phillips Collection. Sydney Vernon is on view through June 6; 1801 Mississippi Ave, SE, Washington, D.C.
Nando Alvarez: Transmutación
Transmutación, at the American Poetry Museum, is an exhibit of screenprints and screenprinted monoprints by artist Nando Alvarez that are filled with a beautiful tension and provide the viewer with a moment to wonder about the stories that inhabit them. The traditional screenprints use colors reminiscent of chicha posters and are paired with poems by poet Sami Miranda that use the layout of those posters to create poems in conversation with Alvarez’s work. Alvarez’s screenprinted monoprints are layered and beautifully rendered. Transmutación opens Saturday, March 23, with a reception at 4 p.m. that includes live screenprinting, music, and poetry written in conversation with the work. The exhibit is on view through the end of April; 716 Monroe Street NE, Washington, D.C.
Revolutions: Art From the Hirshhorn Collection, 1860–1960
Revolutions presents artwork by 126 artists, including Francis Bacon, Thomas Eakins, Horace Pippin, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Pablo Picasso, alongside interventions by 19 contemporary artists, including Torkwase Dyson, Rashid Johnson, and Flora Yukhnovich, that demonstrate how many artistic movements and tropes explored between 1860 and 1960 remain critically important today. The installation, which illustrates the significance of Joseph H. Hirshhorn’s founding gift, includes eight works by Alberto Giacometti and six by Willem de Kooning, as well as less familiar artists such as the Haitian painter Hector Hyppolite, represented with three works. Revolutions is on view through April 20; Independence Ave and 7th Street.
Enjoy the weekend!
