Fluid art originated in the 1930s. The technique involves mixing acrylic paint with a thinning medium and then pouring onto a canvas. Flowing paint and colors are then manipulated into desired designs. Brushes are rarely used; paints are manipulated with an array of tools not generally associated with art. Fluid art is not a random process; outcome is guided by an understanding of the physics and chemistry of paints.
Various techniques for managing the fluid paint are demonstrated during the workshop with ample time for students to produce three to four small canvases each day. Participants need to acquire supplies for this class. Students will pay a fee on the first day of the workshop for shared supplies provided by the instructor. A list of supplies needed may be picked up from the School Store located in room 217 of the Torpedo Factory.
