Instructors Wanted at The Art League — Alexandria, VA

Deadline: Until filled   The Art League is looking for skilled instructors in all visual arts disciplines. We’re particularly keen to recruit new hires for our sculpture, stained glass, and watercolor departments. Preferred applicants will have a personable and patient disposition, excellent communication skills, and the ability to teach their medium to groups of beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced level students. Class sizes range, depending on enrollment, from around 5 to 30 students. Experience teaching is helpful but not an absolute requirement. Art Instructors Wanted, Falls Church Arts – Falls Church, VA

2021 International Alternative Processes, Soho Photo Gallery – New York

Deadline: October 19   Soho Photo Gallery, New York’s longest running cooperative gallery, is excited to announce our 17th International Alternative Processes Competition. Alternative processes include, but are not limited to: Albumen, Cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown, Platinum/Palladium, Gum Bichromate, Bromoil, Salt Print, Tintype, Ziatype, Daguerreotype, Image Transfers, Liquid Emulsion, Photogravure Chemigram as well as handmade prints created from digital negatives.  Traditional Silver Gelatin Prints, C-Prints and Digital Prints are not eligible. Artist Residency, Capitol Hill Arts Workshop — D.C.

Deadline: October 22   Through the Gallery Residency Program, the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) seeks to expand its engagement with artists working in the DMV. The CHAW gallery will, for eight weeks each year, become an incubator space for the selected Resident Artist. During that time, the Artist will transform the gallery while interacting with visitors and students. The Residency provides a well-lit and clean gallery central to the DC area with substantial foot traffic and visibility. CHAW will offer promotion for the Resident Artist, their work and the show. Gutierrez Memorial Fund’s Legacy Grant

Deadline: October 30   The Gutierrez Memorial Fund is pleased to present its 2021 Legacy Grant. The project-based arts grant calls for proposals from arts organizations, individual artists, and educators who are residents of Maryland and whose programs or projects serve Maryland communities. Deadline: November 1  VisArts invites applications and proposals from emerging local and national artists for a twelve month Next Generation Studio Fellowship at VisArts in Rockville MD. This Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for a dynamic individual artist or collaborative artist team to create a new body of work, evolve an existing body of work, or develop a project in a stimulating, supportive environment. Studio space is provided free of charge. Artists receive a $500.00 per month stipend. The Next Generation Studio fellow will present their work in a solo exhibition at the end of their respective fellowship. This Fellowship term is from January 2022 – January 2023. Deadline: November 1  The VisArts Emerging Curator Program offers a unique opportunity for an emerging curator or artist with an interest in exhibition making or curating to work with an experienced mentoring curator to develop and present an exhibition and to assist in the presentation of the mentor’s exhibition. Call for Entry, Portraits Project, The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C. — D.C.

Deadline: November 2   The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC (GMCW) is seeking artwork to be used as part of the PORTRAITS project to be premiered in June 2024. PORTRAITS will represent through visual art, music, and dance, the spectrum of sexual, gender, racial, ethnic, and cultural identities. Paintings, drawings, and photographs are welcome. The artworks may be a portrait, or a scene depicting an aspect of the human experience, including identity expression and historical references specific to the LGBTQ+ community. Selected artworks will be used as projections as part of a live performance, brought to life aurally by music, and visually by GMCW’s 17th Street Dance ensemble to be presented in June 2024. Accepting Artwork for Curatorial Review by AIWA

The Alper Initiative for Washington Art features five exhibitions per year in the newly constructed first floor space in the American University Museum. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Deadline: Rolling. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

Deadline: Rolling. Peripheral ARTeries is looking for artists to be featured in the new special Biennial Edition of their art publication, that comes to its 10th edition. This opportunity is great for both established and early career artists who need a boost to their artist portfolio. Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only. Heroes and Villains

“Carnival of Santiago de Cuba” by Kip Platto; Photography

The forces of good and not-so-good converge in Heroes and Villains, our September themed exhibit. These character archetypes have appeared in artwork throughout history. League artists express their own interpretation of heroes, villains, or themes of good vs. evil—be it a classical reference or humorous understanding—in mediums ranging from drawing and painting to photography, ceramics, fiber art and mixed media. It’s on view in the gallery and online through October 3.

Call for Submissions, 2021 Fall Salon, Target Gallery – Alexandria, VA

Deadline: September 17   Target Gallery introduces a new art sale this year to support affordable art buying for art lovers and collectors. For this special exhibition, we will have up to 75 original artworks for sale by artists local to greater DC metropolitan region in Target Gallery. Each piece will be priced no more than $1,000. There is no theme to this exhibition, instead Target Gallery will have 3 guest jurors who will curate the selection based on aesthetic quality. The goal for this exhibition is to encourage art buyers to support local art. Seventy-percent of sales proceeds go directly to the artists while the rest will go to support exhibitions and programs at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Artist Residency, Capitol Hill Arts Workshop — D.C.

Deadline: October 22   Through the Gallery Residency Program, the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) seeks to expand its engagement with artists working in the DMV. The CHAW gallery will, for eight weeks each year, become an incubator space for the selected Resident Artist. Deadline: November 2   The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC (GMCW) is seeking artwork to be used as part of the PORTRAITS project to be premiered in June 2024. PORTRAITS will represent through visual art, music, and dance, the spectrum of sexual, gender, racial, ethnic, and cultural identities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. Empirical Evidence

According to Hamiltonian Artists, ”As we find our way facing a new normal living with a global pandemic, it seems appropriate to reflect on our history and let our imaginations runs wild in predicting the future.” Empirical Evidence expounds on that notion with works by five renowned Hamiltonian Artists Fellowship alumni—Selin Balci (2012), Billy Friebele (2014), Rachel Guardiola (2018), Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann (2011), and Jing (Ellen) Xu (2019)—who investigate complex human relationships with living systems, the known versus the unknown. Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival

A day of artistic festivities and fun await you at the Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival on Sunday, September 19. The event kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with a parade through Wheaton’s town center (participants are encouraged to carry, wear or perform original artworks), and continues with a gallery exhibiting and selling the works of more than 45 local artists; three stages featuring performances by area theatre troupes, dance groups, choruses, authors, and bands; and food from an array of neighborhood eateries. Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival

The Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival, hosted by the Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art, returns to Reston this weekend. Works by more than 200 artists in a variety of mediums including ceramics, digital and multimedia art, drawing, glass, jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, metal, textiles, and wood will be on exhibit. Festivities also include the first public celebration of the Buoyant Force sculpture by artist and George Mason University Associate Professor Sue Wrbican that is located in Reston Town Square Park; a poetry reading by Heather Streckfus-Green; a specially-choreographed performance by DMV-based dance artist Tariq Darell O’Meally, who will present reprisals on Sunday; and a Take-and-Make activity for young art enthusiasts; September 10-12, 10:00 – 5:00 p.m. rain or shine at Reston Town Center, Reston, VA.

 

 

Stigma

“Paradise Lost by Suzan T. Ok

Merriam-Webster’s definition of stigma is “a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality or person.” Stigma the exhibit, at Del Ray Artisans Gallery, brings to light the challenges stigma presents for individuals connecting with society. In it, local adult and high school artists express their perspective on the concept—how it feels, how it can affect and/or disrupt lives, and how it can be overcome; on view through September 25 online, and in-person, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA.

 

 

Stone Bridge Artists Tour

In their first tour exhibition, Stone Bridge Artists will feature the work of nine prominent local artists with displays of painting, prints, glass, bronze, ceramics, and photography, all in p.m. relaxed residential venues from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00, Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12. We’re particularly keen to recruit new hires for our sculpture, stained glass, and watercolor departments. Preferred applicants will have a personable and patient disposition, excellent communication skills, and the ability to teach their medium to groups of beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced level students. Fall Residency, Hortus Arboretum and Botanical Gardens – Stone Ridge, NY

Deadline: September 13   The Hortus Residency Program is open to established and emerging artists, botanical artists, or photographers, who are exploring the themes of nature and/or the human connection with nature. Hortus Arboretum & Botanical Garden is an accredited botanical garden and arboretum established by by two artists turned gardeners. The purpose of this residency is to provide opportunities to artists whose work focuses on nature. Call for Artists, Art Outside – Hagerstown, MD

Deadline: September 15   Artists are wanted for an initiative that aims to bring art to people who work, live, and pass through Hagerstown’s Arts & Entertainment District. Deadline: September 17   Target Gallery introduces a new art sale this year to support affordable art buying for art lovers and collectors. For this special exhibition, we will have up to 75 original artworks for sale by artists local to greater DC metropolitan region in Target Gallery. Each piece will be priced no more than $1,000. There is no theme to this exhibition, instead Target Gallery will have 3 guest jurors who will curate the selection based on aesthetic quality. The goal for this exhibition is to encourage art buyers to support local art. Seventy-percent of sales proceeds go directly to the artists while the rest will go to support exhibitions and programs at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Artist Residency, Capitol Hill Arts Workshop — D.C.

Deadline: October 22   Through the Gallery Residency Program, the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) seeks to expand its engagement with artists working in the DMV. The CHAW gallery will, for eight weeks each year, become an incubator space for the selected Resident Artist. During that time, the Artist will transform the gallery while interacting with visitors and students. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. August 2021 Open Exhibit

“Staircase to Heaven” by Kitty Petroff

This is the final weekend to view our August Open Exhibit, juried by Eisner Award-winning author and former Library of Congress graphic arts curator Martha Kennedy. Open exhibits are a great way to view the range of mediums and styles of our member artists.

This month’s show features some dynamic streetscapes, including Hidden Beauty, a photograph by Soohyun Kim that received an honorable mention; Chinatown, D.C., an oil painting by Sally V. Parker; Evening View of the City, an acrylic painting by Cecily Corcoran that also received honorable mention; and Baltimore Street, Cida Berry’s moody black-and-white photograph framed on vellum with gold leaf.

Portraiture is also prominent this month. They include The Wayfarer, an oil painting by Ann Wallace; Olivia, Edward Stolar’s red chalk drawing; Woman in Madina, a color photograph by Dian McDonald; and Lucy at the Beach, a gouache painting by Ralph Paine. Bryan Sieling: Re|Context

Artist Bryan Sieling transforms found objects into wondrous works in Re|Context, his solo exhibit of assemblage art on view through September 5 at The Art League Gallery. Cabinet parts, old picture frames, tinker toys, mechanical innards, vintage game pieces, and used furniture are among the disparate materials Sieling used to create the sculptures, shadow boxes, wall reliefs, and what he terms “semi-functional furniture” on displaySays the artist, “I want viewers to be drawn in to study details, discover materials, and ponder possible motives and narratives.” See Sieling discuss Re|Context here. The National Children’s Museum Reopens!

 

In National Children’s Museum’s Engineering Games + Play exhibit, a colorful Washington, DC mural by local artist Meg Biram sets the tone for play; courtesy of National Children’s Museum.

After an 18-month temporary closure, the National Children’s Museum reopened this week with some new bells and whistles including a small, curated gift shop with exhibit and D.C.-inspired merchandise; a brand-new Dance Party Pod presented by Spotify; Sky Survey, a crowd-sourced art installation in the Museum’s new Entry Hall that was created by artist-in-residence Tommy Bobo; and Moomin Animations – Thrills and Cuddlesa new interactive exhibit where kids (ages 3-10) can learn how Finnish author Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomin books are brought to life using animation. Deadline: November 22   The Boynes Emerging Artist Award is an online art competition with a reward of cash, marketing, promotion and art supplies. We accept all 2D and 3D artworks such as paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, etc. on any support such as canvas, wood, digital, etc. We also do not have a requirement on the subject of your work, we are looking for what you consider the best work in your portfolio to be. Call for Submissions, 2021 Fall Salon, Target Gallery – Alexandria, VA

Deadline: September 17   Target Gallery introduces a new art sale this year to support affordable art buying for art lovers and collectors. For this special exhibition, we will have up to 75 original artworks for sale by artists local to greater DC metropolitan region in Target Gallery. Each piece will be priced no more than $1,000. There is no theme to this exhibition, instead Target Gallery will have 3 guest jurors who will curate the selection based on aesthetic quality. The goal for this exhibition is to encourage art buyers to support local art. Seventy-percent of sales proceeds go directly to the artists while the rest will go to support exhibitions and programs at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Artist Residency, Capitol Hill Arts Workshop — D.C.

Deadline: October 22   Through the Gallery Residency Program, the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) seeks to expand its engagement with artists working in the DMV. The CHAW gallery will, for eight weeks each year, become an incubator space for the selected Resident Artist. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artists will install the work using the hotel’s mounting hardware. Labels will be provided by the hotel. All sales handled by artist, no commission.
