Cycles of Life by Curlee Raven Holton; Reductive relief print

SEE Finding a Voice Through Printmaking: Works by Curlee Raven Holton at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. This retrospective of print work by the internationally renowned artist shares over 50 works and represents a variety of print techniques and subjects from his nearly 40-year career. Says Holton, “The art of printmaking and its dynamic variations [allow] the intersections of studio-based art practices and new technologies… [producing] creative mutations and alterations that generate singular or multiple images that speak most effectively to my intellectual, creative, and aesthetic concerns.” Finding a Voice is on view through March 2.

LISTEN to interviews with Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer, who died recently at the age of 95. Best known for his satirical cartoons, Feiffer also wrote stage plays (“Little Murders” and “Knock, Knock”); screenplays (“Carnal Knowledge” and “Popeye”); and illustrated and authored children’s books. In this 1982 Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, he discussed his collection of work “Jules Feiffer’s America: From Eisenhower to Reagan,” and just last year, he chatted with NPR’s Scott Simon about “Amazing Grapes,” his first graphic novel for middle-school-age children.

WATCH contemporary artist Vincent Valdez discuss Just a Dream…his first national touring exhibition, on PBS News Hour’s CANVAS. Valdez, who’s been making art since childhood, focuses on subjects that explore his observations and experience of life in the twenty-first century. The results are powerful images of American identity that confront injustice and inequity while imbuing his subjects with empathy and humanity.

CATCH The DMV Collects the DMV at The Kreeger Museum before it closes on February 1. The exhibit “celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Washington Print Club by presenting an encapsulated history of regional artists and institutions selected from members’ collections,” says guest curator and Washington Print Club member Laura Roulet. Works by forty-nine artists who lived or built their careers in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) represented by works on paper, ranging from drawing, painting, and photography to print-making. This exhibition is presented under The Collaborative, a program developed by The Kreeger Museum to support Washington-area artists.

They have a lot of documents written in cursive, some centuries-old, that are difficult to read—particularly for those who never learned cursive. Call for Artists, Department of Parks & Recreation, Prince George’s County Commemorative Public Art — Prince George’s County, MD

Deadline: March 2    The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), Prince George’s County (PGC) is inviting artists and artist-teams with interest and professional experience in creating site-specific public art commissions, to submit their name and qualifications to an Artist Resource Listing, for outdoor public artworks to be created for a variety of historic sites throughout Prince George’s County. At designated intervals of the program, artist or artist-teams will be selected from the Listing, invited to participate and paid a fee to submit a competitive proposal for a specific site. The artist or artist-team chosen to move forward with the project will be contracted to design, fabricate, and install artwork for that designated historical site in Prince George’s County. The anticipated public art commission for each site will range from $15,000 to $150,000. Deadline: February 20    Wayne Art Center’s 17th Annual Plein Air Festival will take place May 4 through May 10, 2025 when 32 juried artists from across the country arrive to paint scenes within a 35-mile radius of Wayne, Pennsylvania including historic Main Line towns, rolling farm country, downtown Philadelphia and the Delaware and Schuylkill riverfronts. 2025 New River Art Biennial Exhibition — Blacksburg, VA

Deadline: March 1    This is the 18th New River Art Juried Biennial Exhibition. This exhibit traditionally rotates every two years between the Floyd Center for the Arts, the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley in Pulaski and the Blacksburg Regional Art Association (BRAA). The 2025 exhibition is sponsored by BRAA and hosted by the Moss Arts Center for the second time! Instructors Wanted at The Art League — Alexandria, VA

Deadline: Until filled   The Art League is looking for skilled instructors in all visual arts disciplines. We’re particularly keen to recruit new hires for our sculpture, stained glass, and watercolor departments. Preferred applicants will have a personable and patient disposition, excellent communication skills, and the ability to teach their medium to groups of beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced level students. The Alper Initiative for Washington Art features five exhibitions per year in the newly constructed first floor space in the American University Museum. We accept submissions, on a rolling basis,  from Washington artists of all ages and backgrounds, and working in diverse media. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Finally, don’t miss “The Brutalist” starring Adrien Brody as the fictional László Tóth, a brilliant architect and  Holocaust survivor who is commissioned to build a Brutalist style building while rebuilding his life in America.

The Howard County Arts Council gallery program was established to enhance the public’s appreciation of the visual arts, provide a venue to exhibit the work of local, regional, and national artists in a professional space, and provide leadership in the arts by presenting a broad spectrum of arts in all media from both emerging and established artists. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Deadline: January 6    The Windgate Arts Residency Program in Wood is an integral part of the Museum for Art in Wood and is possible through the transformative support from the Windgate Foundation. The residency is an annual two-month program that takes place from early June to early August. Each cohort of resident fellows consists of several artists, one student artist, a documentary artist, and a scholar. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators.
