US/Japan Creative Artists’ Program

The deadline for the U.S./Japan Creative Artists Program is fast approaching and I would greatly appreciate it if you would forward this funding opportunity to any and all professional creative artists on your email lists. Eligible applicants are architects, choreographers, composers, creative writers, designers, media artists, playwrights, visual artists, or solo theater artists who work with original material (including puppeteers, storytellers and performance artists). Multidisciplinary artists and artistic directors of theater or dance companies are also eligible.

The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission works cooperatively with the National Endowment for the Arts to sponsor The U.S/Japan Creative Artists’ Program. The program provides support for up to five outstanding contemporary and traditional artists from the United States to spend a five-month residency in Japan to pursue their individual artistic goals. The next deadline for this program is February 1, 2010.

The U.S/Japan Creative Artists’ Program is extremely competitive; applicants should have regional or national recognition and anticipate a highly rigorous review of their work. Artists should also present compelling reasons for wanting to work in Japan.

Selected artists will receive:

· A monthly stipend for living expenses and a housing supplement, as well as an allowance for professional support services

· Up to $6,000 for round trip transportation for the artist, domestic partner and/or dependent children, and a baggage/storage allowance

· A stipend for pre-departure Japanese language study in the United States

Additional information, including guidelines and the application, can be found at http://www.jusfc. gov/creativearti sts.asp.

Paint the Forest 2010

The Redwood Forest Foundation is proud to sponsor this exciting new art and photo competition whose purpose is to display the beauty and the plight of forests throughout the United States. Your entry may represent any aspect of the forest or forestry industry in any area of the United States and will be judged within any of the nine regions displayed on the Contest Map. The competition is open to all artists and photographers, professional or amateur. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals will be awarded in each of the art and photo categories along with several thousand dollars in cash awards. There is also a “Paint The Redwoods Award” within Region 5 (all Paint The Redwoods entries are automatically entered in the Artist Category). Images may depict scenery, logging, restoration, examples of egregious practices, beneficial aspects of forestry management or anything to do with the forest flora and fauna.

Gold Medal, Silver Medal and other selected artwork and photography will be featured in our National Touring Exhibit, which commences September 3, 2010 in the Sausalito, California area and continues throughout California and the United States. In addition, Bronze Medal and Top 50 Winners will have an opportunity to exhibit their art alongside our national winners at showings taking place at galleries located within each of the 9 Contest Regions. This is a great way for local galleries, museums and art organizations to showcase their local artists alongside our national winners. Artwork and photography will be featured for sale at the prices established by the Artists.

The Foundation’s goal in sponsoring this competition is to promote its version of sustainable forestry practices while assembling the finest display of representational, two-dimensional art and photography depicting forestry and forests. The focus in the jurying is to select paintings and photographs that show the highest quality in craftsmanship, color, and composition and that emphasize a diversity of representational style and subject matter.

All net proceeds go to the Redwood Forest Foundation, Inc., a private, non-profit 501(c)3 corporation whose vision is to establish community-based forests that provide both critical habitat for increased biodiversity and improved economic vitality. The RFFI mission is to acquire, protect, restore, and manage forestlands and other related resources in the Redwood Region for the long-term benefit of the communities located there. RFFI currently owns and operates Northern California’s 50,000 acre Usal Redwood Forest.

36 studios- part 1
Call For Entries: WPA announces 36 Studios – Part 1, a series of studio visits with Mera Rubell of the Rubell Family Collection.
Deadline: Sunday, December 6, 2009 at midnight

Description:
The Rubell Family Collection is one of the leading collections of contemporary art in the world. Started in 1964, soon after Don and Mera Rubell were married, the Rubell Family Collection operates as a non-profit organization based in Miami where it presents rotating, curated exhibitions and hosts a variety of educational and community outreach programs.

Mera Rubell will be one of eight esteemed curators selecting works for Cream, the WPA 2010 Art Auction Exhibition. Building upon the popular Experimental Video Series at the Rubells’ Capitol Skyline Hotel, Rubell has determined to see the work of as many DC-area artists as possible and select up to twelve to be included in the WPA exhibition and auction. Her visits to DC are typically 36 hours long, and she has devoted her next trip to this project.

For 36 Studios – Part 1, Mera Rubell and a team of curators and writers will conduct 36 studio visits over the course of 36 straight hours. Each studio visit will last approximately 15-20 minutes and will take place starting at 5:00am on Saturday, December 12 and continuing until 5:00pm on Sunday, December 13.

Artists will apply to participate and will be chosen at random to have the opportunity to meet and present their work. The work chosen will be included in WPA’s annual Art Auction Exhibition, January 30 through March 6, 2009 at the American University Art Museum at the Katzen Arts Center…
