Collaborative Exhibit with The Little Theater of Alexandria

The Art League is excited to announce a unique opportunity for artists to participate in an exhibit inspired by Mark Twain’s witty send-up of the art world, “Is He Dead?”. In partnership with The Little Theatre of Alexandria, we invite artists to submit their work for an exclusive collaborative exhibit to be held at the theatre from May 18 to June 8, 2024. Artwork will be installed in The Little Theater’s “green room” reception space, and the theater lobby.
About the Collaborative Shows: The play tells the tale of Jean-Francois Millet, a young painter of genius who is in love with Marie Leroux but in debt to a villainous art dealer, Bastien Andre. Millet is foreclosed on by Andre who threatens debtor’s prison unless Marie marries him! The artist realizes the only way he can pay his debt and keep Marie to himself is to die, as only dead artists achieve fame and fortune. Millet fakes his death and prospers, all while passing himself off as his own sister, the widow Tillou. Now a rich widow, Millet must find a way to get out of a dress, return to life, and marry Marie! Mon Dieu!
Twain’s satire serves as the backdrop for this exhibit, allowing artists to explore the intersection of art, humor, and deception. Read more about the play here.

What We’re Looking For: While artist Jean-François Millet and his landscapes are our muses, artists are welcome to submit other genres of 2-D artwork, including work with themes of humor, farce, burlesque, fame, and greed.

Submission Guidelines:
Entry deadline: May 1
Artists may submit up to two artworks for consideration.
Submissions must be original works created by the artist.
All mediums are welcome, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and mixed media.
Artwork should be framed and ready for display.
Accepted artists will be notified by May 8, and must drop off their artwork to The Art League gallery by May 14.
