Michele Hoben

My work is inspired by the intersection of the natural and man-made
worlds. Their boundaries and merging provide a continuous source of
whimsical, haphazard, and spirited juxtapositions; boldness and quiet,
roughness and smooth, items hidden and revealed, unplanned color and
text. It’s a synthesis of my earliest forays into abstraction and subtleties
gained while isolated during the pandemic.
Living alone during Covid isolation, blocks from the Capitol, the events of
January 6th, impacted both me and my art. I painted to maintain a sense of
calm and steadiness. My palette shifted from predominantly warm to cool
colors, my forms became more organic and my marks less frenetic.
While my goal is still to create art that evokes an emotional response and
encourages the viewer to contemplate their personal experiences with the
natural and built worlds; I also would like to impart the viewer with a sense
of peace and transition. By highlighting the temporal beauty and fragility of
our surroundings, I’d like the viewer to harbor a sense of optimism and
responsibility toward improving our planet.
