Description
The cyanotype is often the first process you will encounter in alternative/non-silver process photography. The reason for this is the simplicity in the technique and the likelihood you will make a successful print in a short period of time! This one-day workshop will be broken down into two parts, covering the basic history and introduction to the cyanotype process, toning your final prints (in case blue isn’t right for your subject, as well as explore alternative surfaces on which to print cyanotypes. No prior photographic knowledge is required. Each artist will take home 3 final cyanotype prints, along with an information packet on how to continue making cyanotypes at home, and a Hake brush for coating your paper.
 
Instructor
Allison Nance is an artist whose focus is in photography and mixed media. She received her degree in photography from East Carolina University’s School of Art and Design in 2003, and currently lives and works in the Alexandria, VA. She is also co-founder of microWave project, whose mission is to act as a conduit between artists & groups and businesses to provide space for temporary pop-up, “micro” galleries in the DC metro area.

Inside Outside: A broad interpretation of space and place on the edge and in between. May 13 – June 19, 2011. 

Awards: A Juror’s Award for Best in Show will be presented. The award winner will receive a cash prize and a solo show in the Cohen Gallery at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, the largest, most comprehensive, interactive arts center of its kind in the country. Cash prizes also awarded to second and third place.

Artists are encouraged to widely interpret this call for submissions so that the exhibition concept will reflect the concerns of artists living and working in the Washington, DC area and beyond. Selected artists will receive a stipend of $250 to assist with the execution and transportation of works.

“Commercial” Art Video Call – NY
Deadline: October 31, 10. Open call for video submissions with an opportunity to win $2,000 and have your work shown on a public screen in Manhattan. Artists are invited to submit a video of up to 60 seconds in length using a previously-broadcast t.v. or internet commercial as the raw footage: cut it, dub it, repeat it, add to it, or flip it and make it art. All submitted and accepted videos will be available on the apexart website and will be presented in an exhibition at apexart from November 10 – December 22, 2010. During the exhibition’s run, videos will be voted on by visitors online and to the exhibition space. The Philadelphia Art Alliance (Philadelphia, PA) invites designers and architects from the Mid-Atlantic region to reflect on the concept of leisure and submit objects, renderings or prototypes that either complement and/or comment upon what constitutes contemporary states of rest or play. Deadline: January 3, 11. Drift Station Gallery and Parallax Space are pleased to announce a call for artworks for their upcoming exhibition “Instructions for Initial Conditions”. The show will consist of instructions exhibited as artworks, either to be carried out by the audience or realized in their minds. In Chaos Theory, the initial condition refers to a simple starting point that, when the system is set into motion, is radically transformed into an unpredictable result. Gender Matters/Matters of Gender: Juried Exhibition – PADeadline: December 1, 10. Ever since Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized the collective Womanhouse project in San Francisco in 1972, as well as Judy Chicago’s 1979 Dinner Party, shows centering on women’s reality have become a staple in galleries nationwide. Gender Matters/Matters of Gender, expands this tradition to include works by artists of both sexes who work from a consciousness of how gender is reflected in art, how the artist’s gender influences her or his medium, and how gender often affects the circumstances in which the artist creates. This show will include a range of artists who make art which explores sexual identity, evolutions in biological reproduction and art which is sometimes informed by an awareness of gender based craft and traditions. Intimacy – IL
Deadline: December 5, 2010. ARC Gallery is a non-profit, alternative space run by a collective of women artists since its inception in 1973. ARC is proud to be hosting Intimacy, a group exhibition juried by Andrea Green, Director of the Visiting Artists Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Previously, Green was Associate Curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis where she curated the exhibitions Janaina Tschape: Melantropics, Laylah Ali: Painting and Drawings, and co-curated Contemporary Masterworks: Saint Louis Collects and Alexander Ross: Survey. This juried exhibition aims to explore the notion of “intimacy” as it affects art-making. How can feelings be represented in the formal expression of art? Intimacy can be about the sense of belonging–a sense that you are not alone in the world, that others are literate in your thoughts and feelings. Intimacy can be an attachment to a person or thing that allows you to remain tethered to the world. This juried exhibition aims to explore how notions of intimacy can inform artistic practices and how art can portray the many aspects of intimacy, including, but not limited to, relationships between people, people and things, creator and object, individual and environment, private and public. The gallery would like the entries to consider ideas of: scale, familiarity, proximity, closeness, tenderness, attachment, (inner or inmost nature), being knowledgeable about. While work that engages intimacy as subject matter is welcome, the gallery is primarily interested in investigations of intimacy as a concept in art-making. Drawing Discourse; A Contemporary Exhibition in Drawing – NCDeadline: November 20, 10. As part of an ongoing commitment to promote drawing practices in the visual arts, the University of North Carolina Asheville (UNCA) invites artists to submit entries to a National Juried Exhibition of contemporary drawing. UNCA seeks to examine drawing as it is practiced and defined by today’s artists. This one-day workshop invites participants to join in the process of making original, fun, colorful projects or even special holiday gifts. Several innovative projects using felt and metal in combination are covered, including earrings, beads, brooches, and rings. Participants learn new skills that can be used at home while creating personal projects. Fashion Illustration Class

This fun new class at The Art League School begins this Saturday, October 9, and runs for five weeks… and there’s still room! Click here for more info and to register.


This course introduces basic illustration styles and techniques to aspiring fashion illustrators and designers. Students will work on the drawing, sketching and textile rendering skills needed to create illustrations for sales presentation and production. Basic design proportion and composition are covered. Participants will also learn to accentuate their illustration through style-exaggeration and fabric rendering. Students illustrate poses from supplied fashion photos and render actual fabrics samples for drape, texture and pattern. A familiarity of drawing materials (pencil, ink, marker, gouache) is helpful. 
About instructor Matthew Cuenca:
Hungry for artistic knowledge, Matthew moved to New York City and after four years he received his BFA with Honors from Parsons School of Design. For the next 15 years he worked as a Fashion Designer, Illustrator and Art Director for companies such as Harper Collins Trophy, Moody Publishing, Bill Blass, Avirex, Oleg Cassini, and Oxford Industries. He has also worked as associate professor of the Fashion Institute of Technology. In 2002 he moved with his family to Paris, France and rekindled his freelance career in illustration.

Since 2003 he has exhibited at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, where he won the 2003 Art Award. He has also freelanced for EMG (Alaska), Adept Press (Chicago) and Griffin Grove Games (Australia). In 2005 he moved to Phnom Penh, Cambodia where he started a lucrative career in jewelry, designing exclusive jewelry for members of the Cambodian royal family and local dignitaries.

In 2008 he returned to oil painting and prepared for his highly anticipated exhibition of locally inspired portraits. Following the success of his exhibition Mathew and his partner Jeff returned back to the US for a three year Washington, D.C. tour. Currently he’s a member of The Art League.

Alexandria Exhibition Opportunity

Alexandria Office of the Arts and Alexandria Commission for the Arts – Call for Entries 2010-2012
 The Office of the Arts and Alexandria Commission for the Arts seek artist proposals to exhibit their works in one of 12 galleries in the City.  Proposals will be accepted from individual artists, consortia of artists, and organizations who work and/or live within the city of Alexandria from October 5 through November 10, 2010.

Exhibitions will run for six months. All works must be original and only two-dimensional works will be accepted. No entry fee required.

Materials to be submitted include: application, resume, artist’s statement, and CD or DVD of images. Complete submissions must be received by Wednesday, November 10. Selected artists will be notified by November 22, 2010.

The Arts Commission and Office of the Arts, a division of the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities, promote and cultivate the arts in the City of Alexandria. Gallery West is pleased to announce its 14th Annual National Juried Show. Open to all local or national artists 18+ years of age. Original fine art in any medium is acceptable. No videos or reproductions. Entry fee is $35.00 for up to three original 2D & 3D work only. Jurying will be from digital images submitted via CD only. The juror is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s best known arts personalities F. Lennox Campello. Campello is an award winning artist, a widely published freelance art critic and a curator with more than one hundred curated exhibits under his belt.
