The artist began by setting up one of her still life tableaus: two dolls, parts of which she sculpted herself; a reflective globe ornament; and a skull named Walter.
Oaxaca drew in charcoal and white chalk on toned paper, demonstrating and answering questions all day in the solo room, where spectators were surrounded by her paintings. You can see the results above — and see “Misfits,” her solo exhibit, through May 1.
