Patterns

Swarm by Beverly Ryan; Oil

Patterns are all around us whether they are found in nature—think of grooves on tree bark or the veins in a leaf—or things in manmade environments like scaffolding, window pains, or the bricks on a building. Patterns can also refer to a repetitive process. All of these are explored in Patterns, our October 2022 Themed Exhibit.

“There’s just something inherently satisfying about looking at patterns,” says The Art League Gallery Director Haven Ashley who conceptualized the theme. “It just kinda scratches something in your brain.” Patterns is comprised of 91 artworks in mediums ranging from acrylic and oil paintings to photography and mixed media. It was juried by New York-based painter Cecelia André, and is on view through November 6.

In his solo exhibit Working on the Railroad, oil painter Raymond Burns showcases the rugged character of the railroad in lush detail and rich color, highlighting the unique weather-worn patina of aging locomotives. Working on the Railroad is on view through November 6.

Kinship

Family Portrait, 2004 by Thomas Holton; Inkjet print. Courtesy of the artist © Thomas Holton

Kinship, at the national Portrait Gallery, features the work of eight contemporary artists who illuminate the complexities of our closest interpersonal relationships through portraiture. Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Ruth Leonela Buentello, Jess T. Dugan, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Jessica Todd Harper, Thomas Holton, Sedrick Huckaby, and Anna Tsouhlarakis poignantly visualize the nuances of this theme within and outside of family units. Through painting, photography, sculpture, and performance, the artists reveal how kinship, by its very nature, embraces contradictions. They also highlight the crucial role that storytelling and memories have in connecting different generations, encompassing both the living and the dead. Kinship is on view through January 7; 8th and G Streets NW.

Artful Weekend October 8-9

"Reflection", a watercolor painting by Angela Lacy, received Honorable Mention in October's "Patterns" exhibit.

Welcome to Artful Weekend

-our listing of area art exhibits and events-

This weekend:  Patterns and Working on the Railroad by Raymond Burns at the League; Mark Laguë’s solo exhibit at Principle Gallery; The Woman in White at the National Art Gallery; and Graphic Rapport at Calloway Fine Art.

Patterns

Winter Reflections, a photograph by Hekyung Parkbarr, is this month’s Best-in-Show Award winner.

Patterns was juried by New York-based painter Cecelia André, and is on view from October 5 to November 6.

Working on the Railroad by Raymond Burns

Buffalo Creek & Gauley Engine 14 by Raymond Burns; Oil on canvas

In his solo exhibit Working on the Railroad, oil painter Raymond Burns showcases the rugged character of the railroad in lush detail and rich color, highlighting the unique weather-worn patina of aging locomotives. Working on the Railroad is on view through November 6.

Join us for an in-person opening reception celebrating the Patterns and Working on the Railroad Friday, October 14, from 6:30 – 8 pm. RSVP here.

Mark Laguë Solo Exhibition

Brooklyn Bridge Midday by Mark Laguë; Oil on panel

“Big cities are really my thing,” says Canadian artist Mark Laguë, “There is something about the urban landscape that is so visually exciting to me.” Be it a sweeping panorama of the Brooklyn Bridge; Chicago skyscrapers casting shadows on the traffic below; or a streetcar making its way down a foggy San Francisco boulevard, Laguë”s cityscapes are vibrant, stimulating, and transporting. See them on exhibit at Principle Gallery through October 14; 208 King Street, Alexandria, VA. The exhibit can also be viewed online. Meet the artist at an opening reception Friday, October 7 from 6 – 8:30 pm.

The Woman in White: Joanna Hiffernan and James McNeill Whistler

James McNeill Whistler, Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl, 1861–1863, 1872, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, Harris Whittemore Collection, 1943.6.2

It is on view through October 10; 6th Street and Constitution Avenue. Art League models Desi Steward, Sheba Amante, and Gazelle Powers collaborated with the museum on the exhibit. Read about it here.

Graphic Rapport

Rorschach’s Reality ed. 4/25 by Andrew Sovjani; Archival pigment print

Graphic Rapport is a dual exhibition by Andrew Sovjani and Graceann Warn at Calloway Fine Art. While the two artists work in very different mediums—Sovjani in photography, Warn in encaustic and acrylic—with different approaches to their work, they share a bold, tactile style. Sovjani’s  compositions are deliberate and carefully constructed before the photography begins…

Late Afternoon by Graceann Warn; Encaustic on wood 2022

…while Warn’s paintings reveal themselves to her during the process of their creation. Her surfaces are physically rich, Sovjani’s photographs are rich in surface detail, both of which pull the viewer closer. Presented together, their obvious affinity makes a striking impact. Graphic Rapport opens Saturday, October 8 and is on view through November 5; 1643 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. There will be a reception on opening day from 5:30 – 7:30 pm., and Andrew Sovjani will be present.

Enjoy the weekend!
