October 2024 Open Exhibit
The Art League’s open exhibits are a creative free-for-all, welcoming all themes, processes, media, and content. This October, we’re thrilled to showcase 76 diverse pieces spanning painting, sculpture, glasswork, drawing, mixed media, collage, printmaking, digital art, and photography. It’s a vibrant celebration of artistic expression you won’t want to miss! Artist and educator Nick Serratore juried this month’s exhibit.
Missed Representations by Juliette Manolié
Painter Juliette Manolié presents her solo exhibit Missed Representations, a show featuring abstract paintings about complexity, contradiction, and ambiguity. Shapes from the natural world emerge from her work, with both human and animal-like features. Manolié describes her pieces as “deliberately hard to read, but not impossible. When viewing my work, color and movement strike first, then symbology provides familiarity. I use visceral gestures such as gouging, scratching, and pouring ink to create these mysterious figures where elements of the female body are partial, contorted, or otherwise misrepresented.”
Come celebrate this month’s featured artist at our October Opening Reception and Artist Talk! Mingle with artists and fellow art-lovers and enjoy light refreshments Friday, October 11, from 6:30–8:00 p.m. in the Gallery. RSVP here.

Joseph Holston: Black Lives, A Retrospective
Amy Kaslow Gallery presents Joseph Holston: Black Lives, A Retrospective, a distillation of the artist’s past half a century of creativity: his finest screenprints, etchings, and oils on canvas depicting the simple, daily doings of men, women, and children. Using rich color combinations or tone-on-tone pigment, Holston’s black musicians and chess players pop from the paint’s surface. Some subjects are playful; others poignant; all are alluring. Joseph Holston:Black Lives, A Retrospective is on view through December 8; 7920 Norfolk Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland.
Visual Meditations: Marking and Mapping in Mixed Media by Renee Sandell
Explore the themes of tranquility and introspection captured in Visual Meditations: Marking and Mapping in Mixed Media by Renee Sandell at Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House. The exhibit features a collection of the artist’s latest works, including the thought-provoking piece Peacefulness (2024) (pictured above). Join Sandell for an insightful gallery talk where she will discuss her creative process, the inspiration behind her pieces, and the significance of art as a medium for meditation and reflection, on Sunday, October 13 from 2:00–5:00 p.m. Visual Meditations is on view through December 15; 10400 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia, Maryland.
Sacred Envoys by Rodrigo Pradel
Workhouse Art Center presents Rodrigo Pradel’s Sacred Envoys, an exploration of the profound connection between ancestors and our modern world. Pradel transformed the Muse Gallery with full-scale murals, studded with oil paintings on canvas. This immersive exhibition is a mesmerizing blend of surrealism and realism, manifesting in contemporary urban and natural settings. Sacred Envoys is on view through October 30; 9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton, Virginia.
Enjoy the weekend!
