Expressive Figure Drawing: Exploring Portrait and Figure from Gesture to Long Pose

This summer course invites students to deepen their figure drawing practice through sustained, long-pose sessions. Beginning with dynamic, expressive gestures, students will learn how to develop their drawings into resolved, finished works that retain energy and vitality.

Through guided instruction, we will explore key anatomical landmarks and principles of artist’s anatomy, helping students build a stronger understanding of structure, proportion, and form. Emphasis will also be placed on composition, rhythm, and the thoughtful development of finishing details.

Students will gain practical strategies for moving from initial observation to fully realized drawings, learning how to balance accuracy with expression. This class is ideal for those looking to strengthen both their technical skills and their personal voice in figure drawing.

Model Fee is extra.

Supplies are required for this course.  As a service to our students, most supply lists are kept on hand in the Art League Supply Store. The existence of this store gives students the opportunity to obtain supplies in advance and come to class prepared to work. The Art League Supply Store is in studio 217 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, just around the corner from the Art League School Registration Office.

They are open 7 days a week for your convenience. Due to our large enrollment, we are unable to mail, fax, or read supply lists over the phone. It is the responsibility of the student to acquire their own materials.

Hours: Sunday through Thursday from 11:00am to 5:00pm

Friday and Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm
