Deadline: September 3. The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery is accepting submissions to its fifth triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. Established in 2006, the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition invites artists (18 and over) living and working in the United States to submit one portrait for consideration. Selected artworks are featured in a museum exhibition. This year, the competition will focus on broadening the definition of portraiture while highlighting the genre’s relevance in contemporary art and culture. The first-prize winner will receive $25,000 and a commission to portray a remarkable living American for the National Portrait Gallery’s collection. Additional cash prizes will be awarded. Submissions from each finalist will form The Outwin 2019: American Portraiture Today exhibition, which will be displayed at the Portrait Gallery from November 2,, 2019, through September 7, 2020, before traveling to other cities in the United States. Previous competitions have received more than 3,000 entries.
Deadline: July 19. The Atlanta Photography Group is now taking submissions for Photo Buckhead, 2018. This show will be juried by Michael James O’Brien, a renowned American photographer producing a diverse body of photographic work, from still lives to portraits to commercial art. Deadline: July 25. Theatre Art Galleries in High Point, NC announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, August 30 – September 28, 2018. Artists may submit a maximum of three entries in any medium, including photography. Subject matter must relate in some way to bicycles or cycling. Work must be original and must have been completed within the last 10 years. Giclees, copies, reproductions, or kit work will not be accepted. Dacia Gallery is pleased to invite emerging and established artists to submit artwork for an opportunity to participate in Dacia Gallery’s Eight-Year Anniversary Group Exhibition. Deadline: July 31. Sulfur Studios invites artists working in all mediums to submit artwork that is inspired by graffiti and street art to be displayed in a gallery setting. How does the context of the gallery change the impact the work has on the viewer? What happens when the work is removed from the street and placed in a white box environment? How does this transition from public to private spheres alter the reception of the work’s message? Does this in some way legitimize street art, or remove its integrity? Deadline: July 31. RE:ARTISTE International Art Organization announces a call for artists. The winner receives a week-long artist residency (studio+bedroom). The competition is open to everyone, 18 years and older, established and emerging artists alike. Deadline: August 1. The Guild of Boston Artists seeks entries for a juried art exhibition, September 8-29 in Boston, MA. The Annual Regional Juried Exhibition is a juried show featuring the best of representational painting by New England artists who work in the realist tradition. Work must be representational, with a strong academic background. Prints, including giclees, are not eligible. The Guild has a preference for work done from life rather than photographs. Although works done from photography are not excluded, preference is given to work done from life, especially when the jurors are making the awards. Accepted media are oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, pastel, graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, and pencil. Please check if using any other medium. Deadline: August 3. The S&R Foundation Washington Award recognizes talented emerging artists working in visual arts, music, and dance. This year we are excited to announce the amount of the Washington Award will be increased to a cash prize of $10,000. In addition, the Awards Committee may designate a Grand Prize winner who will receive an additional $5,000. Additionally: Award winners become part of the S&R Foundation network of artists, scientists, and social entrepreneurs. Highlighting traditional printmaking processes in any combination of serigraphy, letterpress, collagraphy, etching, woodcut, lithography, linocut, drypoint, mezzotint, monoprint and solar plates. Atlanta Photography Group is now taking submissions for Rachel Reese Selects, APG’s feature exhibition for Atlanta Celebrates Photography, the month-long, citywide photography festival. The exhibition will be juried by Rachel Reese, the Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Telfair Museums in Savannah, GA. The Virginia Twinam Smith Award is an important part of this exhibition. Two works will be selected for a $500 prize and acquisition into the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. Deadline: August 31. “A SHOW OF HEADS” is an international, thematic group exhibition curated and hosted by the Limner Gallery October 18 – November 10, 2018. The exhibition is based on the portrayal and interpretation of the human head and is open for entry to all artists working in any media. Artlink Contemporary Gallery, in collaboration with Shakespearemachine, is pleased to present an exhibition inspired by Shakespeare, from contemporary interpretations to classical renderings. This is a juried exhibition. Artists working in all mediums are encouraged to enter this exhibition. Deadline: September 16. The Center for Contemporary Art’s annual International Juried Exhibition celebrates contemporary art by both established and emerging artists. The Center for Contemporary Art (“The Center”) is a vibrant regional non-profit art center with studio art classes, a summer art camp, rotating exhibitions and community outreach programs. Juror Midori Yoshimoto, Ph.D., will select work for inclusion in the exhibit and for three cash prizes. This national juried exhibition is open to all U.S. artists working in ceramics, glass, wood, or metal. The Greater Denton Arts Council proudly presents the 32nd annual International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition.Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. The exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. Since 2017, the exhibition has expanded to include works by international artists. Approximately 70 works will be selected by the juror Janet McCall, Executive Director of the Contemporary Craft, for exhibition at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center in Denton, Texas. Deadline: August 12. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with The CyberWire is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPRINT Project, MAP is working with The CyberWire to offer a unique opportunity to female visual artists of the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. Collectively, MAP and The CyberWire wish to acquire and possibly commission, time permitting, plus license the image of a work of art. The image of that artwork will be reproduced in a limited edition and presented to the guests of The CyberWire’s 5th Annual Women in Cyber Security reception on October 18, 2018. The Target Gallery invites artists working in all visual media to submit to RITUALISMS, a group exhibition that explores how rituals are an intrinsic part of the human experience. Whether it be through personal rituals, such as daily habits or quirks, or through a larger cultural context, such as religious or cultural ceremonies, the work in this exhibition will address the universality of rituals and how they foster connection or isolation.
Deadline: July 22. OAIB is an annual exhibition that showcases self-taught artists from across the nation together in Art Enables’ two gallery spaces in September and October 2018. The Target Gallery (Alexandria, VA) invites artists working in all visual media to submit artwork to the Art of Armistice, a group exhibition that explores the after effects of war. The exhibition will focus on the physical, mental, and cultural effects of war on the world through the perspective of both civilians and veterans alike. This exhibition will be paired with different public programs in honor of the 100th year anniversary of the ground breaking of the former munitions plant that the Torpedo Factory Art Center now calls home. Deadline: July 24. Stormy weather—from onset to aftermath and all in between—is the theme of MFA’s (Maryland Federation of Art) 3rd annual exhibition. MFA invites all 2-and 3-D artists to submit any original 2-D artwork depicting the sounds, colors, impact, anticipation, and more, of stormy weather. The selected artworks may be viewed on MFA’s online Curve Gallery from August 15 through September 30, 2018.

Fifty Forever @ Circle Gallery – MFA current Members – Entry fees are $10 for one entry for this all-hang, all-media exhibition. Artworks must be no larger than 20″ x 20″ x 20″, including frame. MFA former members may rejoin and exhibit for $80 during the entry process ($70 for a one-year membership and $10 for the entry fee). Entry fees are non-refundable. In 2018, the international FL3TCH3R Exhibit: Social and Politically Engaged Art will enter its sixth year of sustaining the legacy of East Tennessee State University Art & Design student, Fletcher Dyer, who passed away in 2009. The Smithsonian Craft Show is a prestigious juried exhibition and sale of contemporary American craft in art and design held annually in Washington, DC. Three jurors who are experts in the field and newly selected each year choose 120 artists from a large pool of applicants. Artists are selected on the basis of the originality, artistic conception, and quality of their work. The show is produced by the Smithsonian Women’s Committee. Proceeds from the Show fund grants that benefit the Smithsonian’s education, outreach, research, and conservation programs. Deadline: October 7. Jurors: Nicole Dowd, program director of Halcyon Arts Lab and Leslie Holt, DC-based artist and co-director of Red Dirt Studios. The Torpedo Factory Post-Grad Residency is a competitive juried program that provides meaningful support and three-month term solo studio space. This residency is open to recently-graduated students who earned a bachelor’s or master’s art degree from an accredited university. The program is unique for addressing the critical post-graduation juncture in an emerging artist’s career, offering an opportunity for professional development, and a chance to define their independent work process outside of the academic context. Submissions are open for both art school students in the region and nationwide, provided nationwide artists submit proof of their permanent residence in the area and/or commitment of contributing to the ongoing future of the DC/Maryland/Virginia arts scene. Maryland Art Place (MAP) is seeking writing submissions, love letters of all types, on behalf of “The One Thousand Love Letters Project” and the exhibition “Beyond Beautiful, created and curated by artist Peter Bruun. This exhibition is slated to open January 17, 2019 at Maryland Art Place, with a partner site for the exhibition located at Area 405.
Beyond Beautiful focuses on eight topics –information and guidelines here. Peter Bruun, both curator and artist, will use these love letters to create 1,000 artistic responses to be displayed in the exhibition at MAP and Area 405. To date, Bruun has created over 600 drawings using excerpts from participant’s letters to contribute to “The One Thousand Love Letters Project.” Letters do not need to be submitted based on the listed topics and can be submitted digitally or physically.
Deadline: March 1, 2019. This award is open to residents of North America. Spark Box Studio is accepting applications from emerging, mid-career, and established artists. One artist will receive a month-long residency at our studio in Prince Edward County, plus the $1,000 Dawson bursary. The selected applicant will be granted a semi-private studio space and be given access to the Spark Box Studio equipment and resources. As well, the winner will be provided with living accommodations for their month-long stay. We support a range of disciplines including; drawers, illustrators, painters, writers, printmakers, film makers, performance artists, multidisciplinary artists, curators, book makers, musicians and photographers (digital)
Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. This opportunity is available to visual artists living or working in Maryland. Maryland Art Place will curate four exhibitions a year based on submissions entered through a rolling basis. Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only.
